Shark Fin Antenna
« on: 28 June 2011, 04:32:42 PM »
My Dame Edna 9-5 has a shark fin antenna, though no sat nav. Does this mean that the car is all wired in if I decide to fit and after market double din sat nav? Or is this just a dummy?

IIRC theres a choice of 3, Dummy, GSM and a GSM/GPS combo.
But if your car wasn't specced for sat anv, then there wont be any pre-wiring.

You could replace the shark fin with a combined aerial.  I've just fitted one that does AM/FM/Phone/GPS/DAB.  Still to fit the DAB unit, but it will go in soon.

May I ask where you sourced that one?

The aerial on mine's cracked all over. How easy/difficult is it to fit a new one?

I'm starting to wonder if there is an on-car fix for the cracking of the aerial. (just made the jump to the dark side!)

Thinking of black Sikaflex. Both my cars have 'gone' lately. Both within a month. Interestingly one is a late 2001 car and the other a July 2002 model.

Hmmm

I got it from Bluespot Car Audio.  But it was a while ago (late 2009) - illness and winter weather prevented me fitting it before.  I'm not sure if it's still available.  I chose it because if had the Fakra connectors to match the Saab ones on the GPS and Carphone.  I ran a new cable all the way to the front for the radio aerial as I never found the special  clip-in connector that is used by Saab at the rear amplifier.  It has a built in amp for the AM signal.  I used a supply that is ignition controlled at the rear, but it does mean that you don't get the AM amplifier powered if you sit in the car with the radio on and the engine and ignition off, even if the key is left in.

If you can't get that one, there's a similar one from Panorama, but it doesn't have the same connectors and will need a bit of soldering or crimping.

Some people have done things with bathroom sealant etc.  But it's easy to change - one nut - and, if you don't need an aerial for GPS or a carphone, a dummy will do.  Plenty on eBay etc. Or use a cheap FM one sold in many car shops and just leave it unconnected.  That's what I did on my wife's car.  In a saloon access is through the rear side door.  Pull off the door seal and remove the grab handle.  You can then see it.  If you have big arms you may need to remove the pillar trim too and probably the high level rear brake light cover.

But a few minutes work only. Best with two people as you have to hold the aerial while tightening the nut underneath.

^ How much was that one?  I've picked up the dummy ones new for less then $50 from the dealer and less then $25 from those who attended the Swedish Saab Festival in years past.  Under $30 seems like a good price to me for something that does nothing....

I have the Saab price lists for MY08 & MY10 and in the specification it shows all 9-5 models have the mobile phone shark fin antenna.  I picked a new one up from the well known internet auction site for £35, and it was very easy to fit, even for me!

It was £14.99 in the UK - say $25.  But cheaper ones on eBay since then.

Hi,
If you just want the Shark Fin to look nice, with no functionality, they are available on a well know auction site for less than £5!!
Be careful when you fit any of the Shark Fin typr aerials as it is all to eay to move the headlining down a little too far to make it easier to access the nut that holds it on the roof, with the consequence that you 'crack' the headling!

I had one of the non-genuine shark fin aerials like sgould posted, it leaked water into the headlining which would pour onto the rear parcel shelf. If you do use one of them then I'd probably use some sealant around the gasket, just in case.
