Dead Battery = Limp Mode
« on: 07 October 2012, 08:17:40 PM »
I have a 2006 9-3 Conv. Battery was dead; charged it but inadvertently hooked up backward, neg to pos, etc. Corrected and recharged. Now starts but in limp mode. What do I do?

What damage may I have done? What is the fix?

Welcome! :)

Sorry to hear of the problem.  I'm not sure that I can help, but it would be useful to know which engine you have in the car.  And whether auto or manual gearbox.

I would expect that you have probably damaged the alternator or regulator and possibly the ECU. If the alternator is not functioning it will cause a variety of faults.

All you can do is disconnect the battery again and hope it resets something, in all honesty and with the potential for the damage you could have caused I'd be asking for advice on good local Saab specialists or dealers to get them to hook the car up to the Tech2 diagnostic tool and read the fault codes and give an opinion.

I don't think it would have done the alternator any favours. Possibly blown the diode/s. However, as advised, can't hurt to do the battery disconnect/reconnect action.
It is also possible, as the car runs, that the ECU is OK, and it is limping due to no alternator output - are there any warning lights on and/or messages on the SID?
Keep us posted. (sorry, in the matter of battery posts, there was no pun intended - that would have been too cruel)

Ahh, man, sorry to hear that. My saab garage specifically told me not to do that -  I think it might have been something to do with the accident circuit breaker on the positive terminal, but my memory is a bit hazy - saab garage should know as its a known issue :-\
