2011 95 tid
« on: 08 January 2020, 09:54:59 PM »
Hi, I've just purchased a 2011 95 tid. Its a magnificent car, great driver and the missus is even impressed.
The high gearing takes a bit of getting used to though.

I'm aware that there are issues. I would be grateful if somebody could clarify the oil pick up 'o' ring issue.
I'm aware that the oil pick up from the sump travels through a gallery in the sump. An 'o' ring seals this gallery to the block. This 'o' ring has a life of 50k miles due to heat from the exhaust which is at close proximity. Failure leads to complete engine meltdown. I have read that this issue only effects twin turbo units, 180BHP and not the 160bhp units. any insights?

Do these engines sludge?

Are there other issues I should be aware of?

I'm considering a DPF and re-map job to improve durability and mpg, any thoughts.

And, where is everybody, only a dozen or so posts for this model.

Looking forward to your response.

Mark

Congratulations.

I'm afraid I cannot give any advice on the NG9-5 as I have never had one, which I think is the position for most people around here. But, keep putting stuff up, let us know what you find and a body of knowledge will start to be built.

Thanks Carrera.
None of the SAAB forums have much on these NG9-5s.
However the Vauxhall guys are very busy.
The oil pick up is a gallery from the centre of the sump pan. All 2.0l tid's & ttid's are effected.
This has a strange looking seal that hardens over time, reason unknown. ( personally, bad design ). once hard it can break up and the engine starts to suck air, ouch.
Fuel contamination due to improper/incomplete DPF regeneration is a probable cause.
Solutions:
1) reduce oil change interval to 10k mls.
2) Use only recommended oils.
3) Change the seal at 80k and no later than 100k.
First signs are on cold mornings, 2 seconds of low oil pressure warning accompanied by stop engine. If the seal isn't changed immediately there is a high likelihood of a completely toasted engine. FFS.
10hr job to replace, videos on Vauxhall sites.
Interestingly, this is a Fiat engine, in the Fiats this is not a problem, the exhaust route is one explanation given to explain this.
Happy motering

I have no direct knowledge of the diesels, but I understand the same thing happens on the 1.9ttiD in the 9-3.  First symptoms are that the oil light takes time to go out on a first cold start of the day.

Hmm,

It seems that Vauxhall have found a way to re-invent the sludging problem that the original 9-5's suffered from, the routing of the exhaust being a common factor

From what you have said frequent oil changes seem the key cure, and that's good advice for any car.

DPF / environmental management systems also a causation factor. Does any car with a DPF not have a problem with it ??

Thanks gents.
I paid €5000 (£4500) for the car, very clean with 129k miles.
There will be no more replacement SAAB's, so I'm going to have to be extra careful and lavish with this one.
My Indi will do the DPF, EGR and remap for €450. At the same time we will do the oil seal in the sump.
I'll keep progress posted.

Happy motoring.
