Tramlining
« on: 20 January 2018, 04:57:08 PM »
One thing I have noticed with this Aero with it's non standard 18" wheels and ContiSport tyres, is the tendency to tramline.

I was talking to a colleague who has a Vector Sport estate, and said he had tramlining issues, until he fitted (I think) Avon tyres, and the problem went away. I have read on here as well, that someone fitted Falken tyres, and the tramlining went away too.

Any other tyres that I should look at in future when the time comes to change them?

Also, if I was to retro fit some standard 17" Aero alloys at some point, any suggestions as to the best tyres to fit, and would the 17" wheels/tyres be any less susceptible to tramlining than 18" tyres?

My experience is that bigger wheels with lower profile tyres are more likely to tramline but it's not always a certainty, what size tyres are on the current rims?

If the offset of the wheels is increased beyond the 41mm of the standard it can increase the tendency to tramline.

Do you know the offset?  It's often cast into the back of a spoke as an ET number.  Otherwise you will have to measure it...

There's a set of the correct wheels on Facebook.  I've tagged you there.

I haven't had a chance to look at the rear of the alloys yet, although I have an illuminated mirror on a stick thing, so may try that and see what is written on the back.  ;)

The tyres I have are 225/45 R18

Yes cheers for the heads up on the Saab alloys, Will. Still not sure what to do as I have no space in the garage to store a spare set of alloys at the mo.

My wheels are same size as at 18" on a 2009 Aero TTiD Estate. Genuine Saab ALU.... multispoke.

I had Good Year F1 on when I got it and it pulled into grooves and everything when under power but since fitting my Nokian WRD4 winter tyres back last Spring (used all year round) the car has always pulled in a straight line under full power with no issues.

Took the car for a tracking check today, before I start using it in earnest.

I had no reason to suspect the tracking would be out, but having been stung 2 or 3 times before after buying second hand cars, not getting it checked, only to find the tyres going bald on the inner or outer edges 2 or 3 months later, I thought I would at least get it checked out.

Good job I did. Rear wheels generally OK, but fronts were out a fair bit, with the left hand wheel the worst. All sorted now, but the guy in the workshop said that could have been causing the tramlining.

Be interesting to see if it has been eliminated, or at least improved.  ;)

Probably improved it but bet it's not gone. Mine was out a little before new tyres fitted and it did help but was still there till tyres on.

Mine Nokian WRD4's have been on since last Spring and still no tramlining when booted  ::)

Not this morning as we've had just over couple of inches of snow and as we live in the sticks no gritters - bliss though with these tyres on :)
