Customer Service Desk / Imminent Server Migration
« on: 16 September 2011, 04:57:19 PM »
Please be advised that Saab Tech Talk will soon be moving to a new web host.

This may mean a short period of downtime whilst we move.  We will try to keep this to a minimum.

For status updates, please bookmark twitter.com/SaabTechTalk

Anyone know if it's possible?
This is not currently possible, sorry.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is interesting.  Normally useful how-to type things are pinned at the top of the relevant forum.  If there are submissions for many more 'how-tos' then perhaps this is a solution.  Initially we are reluctant to create too many boards that would result in board blindness leading to people posting anywhere simply as they are unclear on where best to post.  It's a balance and we're willing to move it as required,

Hi Simon

Nothing was intentionally changed here on STT between you reporting the issue and the no-longer-an-issue.

Keep an eye on how things go and let us know on this topic if there are further problems.

At the present time STT is being hosted on some complimentary webspace.  The intention was to see if the board was viable before having to commit to hosting costs.

Since launch we are very pleased with the participation on STT and the plan is to migrate the data to our own server.  We expect this to happen this month (Sept 2011).

There will be a short period of downtime when the migration is implemented, but notice will be given prior to the move.

It is recommended, also, that you keep an eye on the STT Twitter Page (no need to be on Twitter yourself, you can still view the page) where status updates will be posted.

Following the migration we will have plenty of space for participants to upload images.

Customer Service Desk / Mobile device friendly forum pages
« on: 01 August 2011, 11:31:17 AM »
If you are viewing Saab Tech Talk from a mobile device, especially a smartphone, then there are different URLs that you can access to make the pages clearer on smaller screens and to reduce the amount of data that is required.  This means is should be easier to browse STT on slower mobile connections.

For Smartphones with browsers, such as iPhone and Android devices, use the normal URL appended with ?imode
For example:
http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?imode

For phones with WAP browsers,  use the normal URL appended with ?wap or ?wap2
For example:
http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?wap
or
http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?wap2

Why not just have a catch all section called SAAB projects?

Is this the same as a modding section, perhaps?

Just wondering if it would be good to have a modding section and a how to section?

thought i would throw it out there for you guys.:)

Again, good suggestions.

At the moment the concern is that we introduce too many forums that makes it confusing and unweildy with people being unsure where to post.

A modding section could be useful.  The How-To section - what do you have in mind?  Can these exist in forums as stickied topics (such as the Tech II info already posted) or will there be too many for this?  Let us know more of your thoughts?

1)  Is it possible to move the show unread posts
further away from the show new replies
as it is quite easy to click on it by mistake?

2) Is it possible to display the first sentence or so of each post when hovering the mouse over it (as they do in the USA forums?

Great suggestions!  It's a learning process for all of us at the moment.  As SGould says, there is a reluctance to make 'under the bonnet' changes at the moment as we do not wish to cock up any maintenance upgrades that will be required in the future.

Certainly good suggestions and it is something that perhaps can be introduced in the future.

Please keep the suggestions coming, even if we can't do it straight away, we would like to adapt things in the future if it makes STT easier to use.  8)

Would it be possible to add a "View my posts" button so that I get a page which would show me all the threads on which I have commented?

...

Or is there already a way to do this that I haven't yet found?  :-[

There is a way.  When you are logged in, go to PROFILE > SUMMARY then on the left below your name there is a link that says SHOW POSTS.

You could always copy the URL for this link and add it as a bookmark to your browser for easy access.

It's perhaps not as integrated and elegant as we'd all like, but it makes it possible to do what you want.  I think?

Remember, there is always the Show new replies to your posts. link at the top of the page which is slightly different but also helpful.

A Saab News section has been set up here.

Thanks to Chris (Zaphod) for the suggestion.  This topic is for owners to review their Saab in their own words for the benefit of other contributors to STT who may be interested in buying or just reading your views.

We look forward to reading your reviews!
