This one has been bugging me for some time.

When I got the car, I noticed it was slow to warm up. Changed the stat for a non-OEM one and still the same, so swapped it for a genuine Saab and replaced the temp sensor. Checked the temp sensor resistance at 20 deg C and OK.

Still slow to warm up compared to our other one (yes we have 2) yesterday (not  avery cold day) it struggled to get above 74 deg C  cruising at around 50mph.

Have I been unlucky and had 3 faulty thermostats and 2 faulty sensors? I'm thinking maybe a thermostat issue as the cabin heater takes some time to warm up. I was wondering if there's any possible bypass circuit?

WIS isn't terribly clear other than saying that (unlike the B2x5 and B2x4 heads) the stat is in the return from the radiator, not the flow, which probably accounts for it being 80 deg C not 89, but even running in summer it never seems to really get up to the high 80s.

Ideas?

Started recently- on uneven surfaces with slight lock, I can feel a knocking through the steering wheel. It's just passed an MOT so I wouldn't think it's anything like track rods etc. and the wheel nuts are tight.

Worn UJ?

For the last few months I've had an issue with the battery randomly going flat on the 'vert (05 2.0 Aero Auto). I thought it was a failing battery and replaced it but the issue has persisted. I've done quiescent current checks with the car locked etc and it's fine. So something along the way is suddenly waking up and drawing current.

Having had a long run on Sunday, when I came to it this morning it was completely flat- wouldn't unlock etc.

I've got ESID on it and the charging voltage was only around 13.4VC after a 20 min run. So this led me to wonder if the alternator is healthy and if not, could it be the cause of the drain?

Anyone experienced similar?

Looking into why the A/C isn't engaging on the MY04 'vert, Tech2 is showing that the evaporator temp sensor is reading -40 Deg C, so open circuit. Only thing is, I can't find it on the wiring diagrams in WIS. Has anyone managed to locate it?

Odd one this. I've added a towbar to the 9-3 'vert and used a model specific wiring kit, which included an original GM plug in trailer control module.

Using a tester, I've determined all the lights work except the tail lights. However, if I use Tech 2 and activate the trailer tail lights, they work.

Is the only answer a full refurbishment? The wheels on my 9-5 are original and reasonably tidy for their age, but two of them need topping up twice a week. Last week, during the cold snap, one of them went down completely overnight so I assumed a puncture. Took it to a tyre place who said no, it was leaking around the rim in multiple places and they would try to reseal it but recommended a refurb.

I refitted it and came out the following morning to a completely flat tyre. I won't be using them again! Threw some tyreweld in and it's held air better but still needed a top up.

What's to do? I don't particularly feel like chucking £50 a corner at a refurb when, as I say, they're cosmetically in fairly good order.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Total CPS failure

Odd one this.

Went to try to start the 9-5 on Monday. Turned over but wouldn't fire. Cold, wet, so gave up and took the other one.

Finally investigated last night- the CPS is completely open circuit. Not encountered that before.

So this weekend I will have the joy of replacing it. I'm not going to mess around, I'll drop the (3") downpipe rather than swear at the limited access...

On a whim on a Saturday lunchtime (I can't even call it late night drunk shopping!), I bought a 9-3 convertible, picked it up on Monday.

Not so much what I did to my car, but oops I bought another one.
05 9-3 Aero, Nocturn Blue, Auto, 140,000 miles.

Bad bits:
  • some rust on top of the OS rear wing
    wheels very scabby
    drivers window doesn't work
    park assist doesn't work
    drivers door handle snapped off
    leather a bit scabby
bit of whirr from autobox going into D when cold
    cup holder jammed
    radio reception poor
    small coolant leak

Good bits
  • bodywork generally good (apart from rust as above)
    well maintained
    MOT until May next year
    suspension is noise free
    roof in good order
    A/C nice and cold

Anyone want to guess how much?

So, a good summer project to sort out all the little niggles...

The main beam switch is intermittent. If it latches on, it won't then turn off (unless you turn the headlights off).

I see that the stalk is available as a separate part but it doesn't look like it has the switch in it. So, is it possible to just replace the switch part of the CIM, albeit with some disassembly?

Servicing the car yesterday, I noticed two pipes that appeared to have broken off down by the side of the air filter. I didn't see them when I did it last September, which was only a few months after I got the car.

They come up into the engine bay and seem to route into the PCV vent hoses so my thought was they might be related to the Evap system. From the WIS diagram it looks like they could be connect to the "service port". But why would they be down behind the air filter housing? I can't find any reference to the port in EPC, although WIS lists a procedure for changing it (but not as far as I can see, what its purpose is). I'm guessing that a fix may be to just join the pipes together?

Any thoughts?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Edna Aero tyre sizes
« on: 28 August 2018, 10:31:52 AM »
WIS says that Aero model Ednas came with 235/45/17 only, but the 2.3T  could have those or 225/45/17.

Is there any reason that anyone can think of that I shouldn't fit 225s to an Aero- I ask because I have two new 225s in stock so to speak and also 225s are somewhat cheaper.

I must be missing something really obvious... other than disconnecting the battery, how do you zero the trip counter in the bottom right hand corner of the dash display opposite the mileometer

Looking at a colleague's car...

The remote locking behaves very oddly. Sometimes it will lock all the doors, sometimes it doesn't, but it always unlocks them (including if the driver's has been manually locked). More often than not, it is the drivers door that won't lock. I put Tech 2 on, no faults, and the lock/unlock switch on the inside of the door operates properly and works the lock motor.

I'm wondering if maybe the problem lies in the drivers door CL motor which AFAIK has integrated switches to determine the position of the lock.

The headlight main beam latch doesn't operate most of the time, but flash it fine. Sometimes by wriggling it around it will latch. The reading tallies with what I see on Tech 2, and I can also individually activate L&R main beam with Tech 2 so my first thought was it's the switch.  From what I can see, it requires the entire column module to be changed. Is this the case and are there any gotchas?

Now, there's a further potential factor in this... after a flattened battery was recharged, apparently it had a test done on it and whilst the CCA was fine, it was reported as being noisy. I've come across this before on another car; apart from starting etc. a critical function of the battery is to smooth the alternator output and reduce ripple etc. for the control modules. Now, whilst this makes absolute sense whilst the engine is running, the faults above all occur when it's not running so I don't think it's a factor but I'll chuck it in for completeness.

Classic Saab 9-3 & GM900 (MY 1994-2002/03CV) / C1377/C1390 ABS code
« on: 27 October 2017, 08:26:22 AM »
With it's MOT due tomorrow, yesterday eve the 9-3 decided to throw a wobbly with the ABS.  >:(

I pulled the codes:

C1377 (Wheel sensor front right no signal)
C1390 (Wheel sensor wrong number of teeth)

I cleared them but the C1377 persisted. Following WIS I read the voltage value and it was 0.8V, indicating a fault (open or short circuit).

Is this actually something that would clear once the car is driven? Or does anyone have experience of rectifying this?

TIA
