Does anyone remember the name and address of the Saab dealers that used to be in Sutton Coldfield? They were a branch of a small group, three or four sites, another site was in Cardiff I think.

I'm just trying to remember where and who they were, no other reason. I bought my old 9-5 from them back in 2005.

Thanks in advance.

August's CAR magazine dropped through the letter box yesterday. (Three Red Alfas with a red background on the cover if you're looking in WHS etc.)
Nice five-page article from page 122 onwards in their Icon Buyer feature, on buying old Saabs - it features a K reg 900 Turbo, a mid-90s 9000 Aero, and a late plate 9-3 convertible. Worth a read, even if you don't feel like spending nearly a fiver on the magazine.

As the STT readership seems to grow ever smaller, may I take the opportunity to wish those still checking in here, those whose knowledge has been a tremendous help over the years, and not least those who've just (just!) been internet friends, a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and all the best for 2018.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Balancer shafts
« on: 04 December 2015, 07:52:13 PM »
Chaps, over on another forum I visit, someone's posted the comment:

"Balancer shafts have caused problems on all sorts of engines over the years including Ford V4, Saab 2.3. "

I don't recall this being much of an issue on STT nor the old forum. Is this so?

TBH there's a lot of dross to sift through on this other forum but there is some useful stuff. Around 5%.

(I've posted on this section because it seems to get the most knowledgeable/active contributors - nothing against the rest of STT!)

Got my renewal quote today from LV - £366, down from £372 last year. All things considered (postcode, work status, Hirsch upgrades, courtesy car, protected NCD, voluntary excess, other half included, claims record, etc.) I'm fairly happy, considering in years past I've paid a lot more.

Still, as every year, I started searching the net. The meerkat's lowest quote for exactly the same cover is £261.

EXACTLY the same cover.
With LV.
Not a subsidiary of LV used for channelling comparison sites, as I know they (and others) often do.
LV itself.

I'm looking forward to phoning them tomorrow.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Door mirrors
« on: 26 February 2013, 03:22:41 PM »
Door mirrors, as worn by the 9-5.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.

From the top, as everyone will recognise, are the three faces of the 9-5.  There is an original 9-5 (separate front grille and bumper), a facelift 9-5 estate, a facelift 9-5 saloon (both with one-piece bumper and grille), and a Dame Edna.

Please note the door mirrors. The first two (let's call it mirror type A) have the "rounded" housing with a near-vertical break in the join to the body (though they do hinge horizontally, with rather like a kitchen cupboard hinge action).
The second two (type B) have the housing with a pronounced crease and a near-horizontal hinge line (and the folding action is actually more pivot than hinge).

As far as I can tell electric folding is not related to type of housing. Mine are manual folders.

Until an hour ago, I thought type A was only fitted to the first face, and type B fitted from the facelift to the end. Clearly this isn't the case. Google Images (other search engines are available) has many examples showing mirror type A fitted to facelift cars. It seems Saab changed the mirrors from A to B sometime during the life of the facelift version.

Why all this? Well, a week or so ago a bloke in a Volkswagen Polo clipped my offside door mirror (type B, on a late facelift pre-Edna model) and smashed the housing. To give him his due, he confessed all to his insurers and they are paying for the repair. A day after showing my car to the repairers they phoned to say they'd got the mirror ( :o ), bring the car back and it'd be fitted while I waited. Guess what? Yes, they fitted a type A.
After politely pointing out the error of their ways, and saying I'm not interested what their computer said, I left it with them to get the right one. I'm not holding my breath.

It just looks odd as it is, so I'm not prepared to accept this half-job. I didn't break my mirror, so I'm not going to compromise on this, other than I am prepared to have the type A left on the car, provided they fit one on the nearside too, but I haven't told the repairer yet. In its favour, the type A has a plastic black door fillet triangle, which won't corrode like the alloy one on the type B - and my remaining nearside one is severely corroded.
Against type A, the mirror itself is a little smaller, doesn't have the adjustment range, and doesn't seem to be able to fold forward as well as back, so more susceptible to damage than type B (ha ha!).
(If I offer the repairer the option of replacing my remaining mirror with a type A, at least I'd avoid having to refurbish the alloy door fillet.)

Now, does anyone have any experience of trying to find a type B mirror? A good trawl of the web has been fruitless. Type A seem to be readily available.
Any comments or observations to make?

Thanks in advance, apologies for a long post, and acknowledgements to any copyrights on the images - fair use, not for profit, etc.

This comes under the heading "off-topic chat"...

I occasionally change my avatar, this is the cockpit of a Saab Viggen. Now that IS Aero specification.  :)
But the reason for my post, I've just read that it was powered by a Volvo engine.  :o :'(

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Bad weather sets alarm off
« on: 07 December 2012, 10:33:42 AM »
Morning all. I've seen the several threads on alarm problems but not quite had this covered, as far as I can see. Three or four times over the past few years, when there has been a sudden torrential downpour - usually hail - and not too windy - the alarm on my nearly 8 year old ('54, Jan 05) 95 has gone off. Always at night.   ::) :-[ . The car is parked outside on the driveway, not garaged.

It's now done it five times in the past few days, to the extent that last night I had to leave the car unlocked. We have had some really heavy and sudden rainstorms, but not particularly windy.

Doesn't trigger if I try rocking the car (not easy, esp. with Hirsch suspension) and is only triggered by sudden rain/hailstorms

Is it the module/battery in the wheel arch, or the tilt sensor (which I'd prefer it to be, since I understand it's inside, under the driver's seat!)

Or something else? Over to the experts...

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / EML, emissions, injured Cat...
« on: 28 August 2012, 11:09:31 PM »
Hello again chaps. I've a '54 plate 2.3t auto Vector, Hirsched, 105k on the clock. Practically everything's been done over the past few years - throttle body, turbo and sump drop, DI cassette, and most recently the CPS and leaking head gasket.

Everything's been fine for the last 4k, then yesterday the EML came on and stayed on. No loss of power, no change in engine behaviour, cruise control still operative, and no alarm bells other than EML. Took it to my local indy (not a SAAB specialist per se, but certainly an engine specialist, and I've known them for 15 years plus) who ran their diagnostic and say it shows "emissions outside normal parameters". (I haven't got ready access to January's MOT but IIRC the emissions were close to legal limits.) The indy said one cause could be the cat is possibly damaged and failing, possibly helped by the gradual burning off of coolant over a few weeks when the gasket was developing its fault and also the passing of unburnt fuel when it wouldn't hot-start when the CPS was similarly playing up. They found no other issues, the Lambda sensors were checked and found OK. They cleared the EML and said bring it back if/when it recurs. It uses no oil between services.

I'm happy with their judgement but would appreciate any observations. TIA.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 Mirror removal
« on: 04 April 2012, 11:44:02 AM »
I would add to the list of bad bits the peeling paint on the door mirror housings, which is also starting to happen on the door handles and roof rails on my MY2002 estate.

Hi Collywobble, mine too. Can anyone tell me how to get the mirror housings off for repainting? I know there was a post on the old site about how to sand down and repaint, I'd prefer to do that with them off the car rather than use masking tape. Thanks in advance.

Off-topic chat, Help, Advice, General motoring issues / Drive to Sicily
« on: 17 January 2012, 08:35:28 PM »
This is a request for suggestions from the seasoned Euro-travellers out there.

I was looking forward to a holiday in March when four of us (me, SWMBO, best pal of 50 years standing and his SWMBO) were to drive/ferry to Palermo to spend some time with his sister and return. Three weeks start to finish, or thereabouts. Travelling in his Peugeot Bipper Tepee (I know, I know, but he has owned several Jaguars, most recently two XJs, an XK an XF) with the aim of keeping fuel costs down, enjoying the trip, and having the space to bring stuff back to England prior to his sister's move to Normandy later this year.

Initial plans were to drive, Chunnel, drive, 20 hour Genoa ferry to Palermo, and same return. 1500 miles driving each way, with a few overnight stops.

Things have gone awry 'cos big sis won't be out there (medical probs while home for Christmas) so it's now more of a rescue mission - get out there, empty her flat, bring stuff home. Oh, and her Peugeot 107. Of the four of us, only me and best pal will be driving. Me and him share driving out, coming back he drives the Bipper and I drive the 107.

So, do we still do it as a foursome, taking a roofbox on the Bipper, do it as a twosome, drive all the way to the foot of Italy, or change the Italian ferry leg from Genoa/Palermo to Naples/Palermo, factor in some Easyjet/Ryanair, or what?

The bare minimum is one car/two people going out, two cars/two people coming back.

Over to you!
