Saab 9-3 2.0t 2006 Auto ....new play mate....
« on: 06 January 2022, 01:32:17 PM »
Tech 2 from Santa...

New toy arrived today! Tech 2 clone. So thank you Schumi JS from the https://www.facebook.com/groups/Tech2OwnersClub for 'passing' it on. It reads codes right out of the box, so that's great. However, I will definately need security access and there are no cables that came with this for that to communicate with my PC. From what I have read I need two cables...a USB from computer (I have an old Sony Vaio Windows XP with GlobalTIS installed) to RS-232 and a RS-232 to RJ45 that connects to the side of the Tech 2......I think this is right but happy to take advice on this...is there a one stop shop that sells these? or better still, anyone here have these to sell! I'm based in NW France if this helps.
Thank you, M

I got a lead with associated driver from a company whose name I can't remember  but something beginning with P.  It was a common one at the time and it didn't work consistently.  I replaced it  with a cable and driver under the name FTDI. Which worked well until my computer failed.  I have another computer, but through sloth, I haven't reinstated the link to Global TIS...

I would recommend the group on Facebook. Tech2 enthusiasts group and the associated Tech2.wiki  which has a lot of info https://www.facebook.com/groups/Tech2OwnersClub

[edit]  I see you've found the facebook group already!! :)

Thanks Will...yes, found the groups! Bought my unit off there....only 220 all in...but no cables for security access....seems less of a deal now........just trying to find the lowest cost option for it to work......this seems ok https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185083999861?epid=129400875&hash=item2b17ddb675:g:J7wAAOSwK8VhWGqa.  going to be 50 all in but hopefully will work...I will ask my 'local' French Saab group just to see what they say...spreading the Saab love far and wide....got to keep her going......

You can do a lot of stuff on the 9-5 without any security access.  It's only the later 9-3 that uses it extensively.

Why not give it a go as it is and see what happens.  You will probably still need the cable for connecting to Global TIS, but I have found that i rarely need it.  That's why I'm currently procrastinating with sorting out the computer.

On the very early 9-5 you don't even need a Candi box.

It can be very random with which cars demand security access and which do not, typically you will only need security access if you want to reprogram a control module with different software, program a key or do an "add/remove" for a module, although not all cars will demand security access, it seemed to be more common that Aero models would want it.

As for the usb/serial interface, it's been a long time since I had to make one work (10 years!) but I think it was those with an FTDI chipset that were most reliable, some of the cheaper ones back then would not work.

Thanks for replies...went for the Ebay one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233371790456?hash=item36560aec78:g:RboAAOSwFVJeIaRv&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338768598&toolid=10001&customid=130832X1595947X23b2a6c9c597b06af1f0a7480ef33598  probably a bit on the steep side but I thought in my tiny head if it all goes wrong I can pass on the complete diagnostic package to another 9-3 owner and not loose out.

Going to have a play this morning...without security access...to see what I can do.

Question...on power.......I know it is powered by the OBD2 port but for it to work you need to turn key to on.....won't this start to drain battery ....can you infact turn on the engine and do things on the Tech 2? Don't want to render it as a paperweight so early doors into my possession.....

Thanks,
M

It will be live without the ignition on. It will tell you when you need to turn the key on.  Some of the cloned Tech2 will restart when the ignition key is turned, but it depends on the clone.

If you have a problem connecting, check the pins in the car connector, they are quite loose and sometimes move back and don't connect when you put the Tech2 connector in.

Right, had a little play....

One code.... :D  DDM B1585 06
Believe this is a short of some description to the wing mirror......don't think this is the end of the world , think we can live with that one!

Was going to play with it some more but didn't have engine on so worried a bit about zapping the battery...

Security access cable should be with me next week and guess that's when the fun can start.....seem to have Global TIS set up on 'pooter but can't seem to get TIS2000 on it........fun times ahead!

I used to reprogram them without hooking up to a charger for up to an hour, I'd get a bit more nervous past the hour as a power cut would potentially render the module unprogrammable.

Thanks ...good to know this...so a 10 min session or so won't be a problem then.

I haven't got a cigarette lighter charger....do I need it for my car? 9-3 2006...I suppose its the same as plugging it into the OBD2 port anyway......is it better to have the car actually running when using the Tech 2 do you think?

you only need to run the engine if you're diagnosing an engine/gearbox/traction control fault or need live date from those systems, if not don't run it while using tech-II as it can cause issues.

If you need to have the engine running or the ignition on or off, the Tech2 will tell you.

UPDATE alert...new Virtual COM adapter arrived today...plugged into old Sony Vaio XP laptop with GlobalTIS installed, drivers installed automatically. Then plugged in Tech2 and was able to get security access! Changed the setting for the auto lock on the doors at drive off and disabled it and it works! So that's all good! Hopefully I won't have to use it on my car too many times but it's good to have the comfort knowing that if something goes 'bing bong' then I can access the data as well as helping others in my area and if the worst comes I can marry stuff to it.......happy days...

Might have another play tomorrow....so much fun! Wonder if I can enable the ejector seat function....... :)
