Grinding 5th gear
« on: 17 April 2015, 07:19:46 PM »
2009 9-5 TiD manual with 140k.

All generally fine, but unless fully warmed up, synchromesh getting caught out going into 5th.

Clutch seems fine and none of the signs of dmf issues.

Sound like clutch or gearbox??

Thanks!!

Sounds like gearbox to me. However, if you're taking the gearbox out then the cost of a new DMF and clutch will not be much for parts on top if you have to replace any gears.

I would check the gearbox oil levels and try an oil change first if it's possible.

Hmmm. That's what I was worried about. Did oil change and seemed a bit better for a while but not solved. Might just go on for a while and see if it gets worse.  Can avoid 5th til warm!

Some years ago my 1999 9-5 manual had a crack in the gear linkage, might just be worth checking that as well. TBH I didn't really notice it, and the new part didn't make much difference - the manual shift wasn't one of the better attributes of the car, it was always slightly baulky and didn't like quick changes. Much prefer the auto  :)

First in 4 cars I've had a manual and as I get older and lazier its certain next will be auto! On top of that the diesel 5 speed is crying out for a sixth on the motorway. But that's one of the things the "new" 9-5 got panned for - too high a sixth!! You can't win.

Is this not a known fault on the manual box? IIRC Saab issued a repair kit for this problem - consisting of something like a 20p washer that costs about £500 to fit. Does that sound familiar to our experts?

Not that I recall, there was a 5th gear repair kit which was about £250 (the parts that made up the kit were more like £600) which then still required £300 of labour and other parts to fit.

Due service in June so will just go gently til then. If I go into 5th at around 45 mph it slides in quite smoothly....
