Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / FRONT WING DIFFERENCES
« on: 11 October 2012, 10:06:56 PM »
SWMBO has had a small coming together with a Peugeot 306 driven by a man with no brain who decided to pull out from a layby as she was alongside. Our excess is £350 and he won't admit liability as there are no witnesses and he is unfortunately insured with the same company as us (Aviva - they are absolute c**p) so we are looking at having it fixed ourselves so we won't loose our no claims and it really doesn't warrant a new wing on a 9 year old car.
So the reason for my post is to ask if anyone knows the difference between the pre and post facelift wings?  The EPC gives different part numbers but shows the same line drawing for all years from 1998 to 2006.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / INTERMITTENT REAR LIGHT FAILURE WARNING
« on: 19 September 2012, 08:53:14 PM »
Had a couple of occasions over the last couple of weeks when the 'rear light failure' warning message came up. First time SWMBO was out on her own, tonight going over to my son's to take birthday present to youngest grandson, put sidelights on and message came up again. Got to son's and send SWMBO to stand at the back while I operate indicators and brakes - all lights working correctly.  Turn sidelights off and on again - now no message!

So, where should I start first, look for a faulty earth or a loose bulb?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Wild windscreen wipers
« on: 17 August 2012, 08:07:51 PM »
I have asked this question before but didn't have a definitive answer.

A typical wet day in North Devon ranging from torrential rain to light showers. When you keep changing the wiper settings from continuous to intermittent they just give up and stay on permanently, even when switched off, only resetting back to normal after the car is stopped and the ignition turned off.

So what is causing the problem, a faulty wiper motor or dirty or worn switch contacts?

Any ideas and advice gratefully received.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Silicone Vacuum hose.......
« on: 15 August 2012, 08:23:36 PM »
Noticed that the vacuum hoses are starting to degrade on my 133k 2.2 TiD so have used the WIS to identify which hoses they are and have decide to replace them with Samco (around £9 for 3 metres as opposed to £58 for 5 metres of Saab OEM) but I remember from earlier posts on this subject that the Saab OEM hose is 3.5mm bore whilst the Samco comes in 3 mm or 4 mm. So which size should I use?  Should I also replace the 'T' pieces, non-return valve and the 3 filters in the system as well?

Now SWMBO says she wants pink or purple hose - shouldn't have shown her the Samco website!

There is a post (by the member formerly known as Aus715) on that forum that we all used to belong too which gave a fix for the stuck rear centre seat belt. The fix is to undo a bolt under the seat squab, as I understand the problem is caused when the seat is lowered and the belt retracts past the upper button in the belt.

Does anyone have any photos or could tell me the section in the WIS where I can see exactly where this bolt is.

Having already replaced the oil trap/oil filler on my 2.2TiD once to try to stop the standard oil leak from there I obviously didn't put enough sealant on it (used the correct Loctite 5699 grey silicone.)

Anybody got any advice as to how much to use and whether to put it on the oil trap or on the cam cover around the filler hole itself. Am getting fed up with the mechanic writing 'oil leak to engine' every time it goes in for a service!

Considering replacing the 9-5 estate with a 9-3 Sportwagon. Usage is 10-12k a year SWMBO does a 15 mile round trip to work everyday plus we do 3 or 4 long trips a year, Scotland, Yorkshire, or similar places east. Bearing in mind I have driven diesel since 1983 and the 9-5 is the 2.2 TiD and is at its happiest at speeds above the legal limit on the motorway will I be happy changing to a 9-3.  I have read somewhere that the seats are not in the same league for long distance comfort as a 9-5.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / I need a little guidance.......
« on: 01 May 2012, 12:47:58 PM »
So, yesterday morning when SWMBO was setting off for work the "FILL COOLANT FLUID" message appeared on the SID. Traced the problem to the heater bypass valve and am awaiting a new one from that well know internet auction site (hope the bargains don't vanish due to the obscene price rises from the  Post Office!).

I have read the removal/fitting instructions from the WIS and need a little guidance with the task:

1. Will the brake hose clamps a kind neighbour has lent me do to clamp off the water hoses?
2. Should I replace the stupid hose clips that need a special tool to remove them with proper Jubilee  clips?
3. The WIS says to drill out the rivets holding on the solenoid valve and replace them with small nuts and bolts. Will I need to do this or will the valve I have purchased have the solenoid valve already fitted.

At least it didn't need Tech 2 to diagnose the fault!

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / SERVICE THEFT ALARM - AN OLD FAVOURITE
« on: 05 February 2012, 09:54:15 AM »
Recently and occasionally the 'Service Theft Alarm' message comes up on start up.  Can't be the siren as I replaced that about 6 months ago.  Handbook informs me that it is likely to be the tilt or glass break sensors.  I understand that the tilt sensor is under the driver's seat and the there are 2 glass break sensors, one in the roof light at the front with 2 types, one for leather upholstery and one for fabric, although I cannot see what difference the upholstery makes, and the other in the luggage compartment roof light, which doesn't care what upholstery the car has! Is one more likely to fail first, and will Tech 2 identify which one is faulty?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / ABS Warning lights
« on: 30 September 2011, 07:15:07 AM »
On start up first thing in the morning the ABS light, the exclamation mark brake warning light and the central warning light come on and the warning 'bong' sounds on our 2.2TiD estate.  All go out if re-started and haven't come on (yet!) while driving. Also doesn't happen when when SWMBO leaves work at the end of the day.

So, faulty ABS ring on hub, or sensor, or is it the servo pump going home and not pressurising fully when first started?

I have posted before about this in the forum that a lot of us have moved over from but got no definitive answer.

Wipers will work continuously in intermittent mode and still work if turned off.

What is causing this - all I can think of is either faulty motor, faulty relay or faulty/dirty contacts on the wiper stalk, My knowledge of auto electrics is virtually zero so can anyone point me in the right direction?

SWMBO who uses the car daily reckons that if you hold the stalk the wipers function normally.

So take it out and clean contacts or throw it away and buy a new wiper stalk?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Plastic nut.......
« on: 03 July 2011, 10:31:12 AM »
Having successfully replaced the failed alarm siren with a re-furbished one from a company north of Bristol whilst removing the wheel arch liner the stud that the long plastic nut is fitted to sheared off. Before I attempt to remove the wheel arch line completely, (and break the other plastic nut/stud!), has anybody replaced whatever this nut screws onto. As I pulled the liner away something metallic dropped down which has disappeared into the gravel on my drive. I see these type of nuts are in various places in the engine compartment but the EPC or the WIS does not show what they connects to.

Any suggestions gratefully received!
