Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / Which heat sensor or what is going on please ?
« on: 18 February 2016, 10:56:04 AM »
I think I have 2, possibly 3 separate problems - or is it one ?

Saab 9000  1996  2.3T

1. Anaolog water temp gauge is always on cold. Don’t think it ever moves

2. If stuck in traffic or stationary with the engine running the digital temp gauge goes up quickly, 10 -15 minutes temp goes over 20’c in the winter. Been 30'c in the summer in one jam.
I know this is to give outside temp but I'm sure it is picking up heat inside the engine compartment. Water is overheating as fan is not cutting in. I've lifted the bonnet after one f these episodes and it was *hot*.

3. When I turn the engine off the fan runs for a couple of minutes, even if I have only moved it out of the garage.

My mechanic thinks I need a sensor or two.

What thoughts here please ?

Get it looked at and fixed asap

Timing chain went on my original 9000 and wrecked the engine.
Around £2000 to put right so I got a newer 9000 for £1700
Still wish I had that original 9000

<later> or was it the Cam chain .....

Get it looked over anyway. Want to keep that lovely motor going

I would ask the usual suspects for advice and a second hand part if that's what's required.

www.neobrothers.co.uk

There's a few on a well known auction site too.

Thanks Mark, will do

Driveshaft bearing wear normally manifests itself most when under load as a judder. I had mine fail a couple of times but I only felt it under hard acceleration. It should be driveable as long as you don't put too much load on it.

A quick look round and I agree it doesn't seem easy to get hold of a complete driveshaft. Buying s/h can be problematic because there were subtle differences in length and if you don't get the right one, it will pop out. If you do go the s/h route, make sure that the replacement driveshaft is put against the old one to check the length is correct.

Assuming though it is the tripod bearing and not the cup that is worn, then it should be OK to just fit a new tripod bearing.

Thanks. It was one hell of a judder. I assumed I had a broken car.
My guy thinks the bearing jammed and then freed itself.
S/h not for me on a drive shaft on a 2.3 Turbo !
I like saving dough but sounds easier to drop a new drive shaft in rather than get him in twice and lose the car for x days.

Not in stock or available for my mechanic from his usual source

Can you please recommend a place for a good one  ?

Alternative is to take the old one off and have it rebuilt - I feel apprehensive about that

Symptoms
Driving along motorway around 70 felt a terrible judder from front near side like  tyre blow out.
Pulled to a stop saw and felt nothing wrong so drove off slowly and managed to get home, max 40mph.
My mechanic had a look an thinks one of the bearings inside has gone.
Says I'm safe to drive but I'd rather not risk it

Assuming I get this done what else can sensibly be done while he's in there ?

Clutch comes to mind even though it seems fine, probably done around 30k miles

I'm not a tester, but as much as I like the idea they would probably argue it is removable or not part of the car. If it take a while to get first fix or you go through a tunnel, you would be driving without a working speed indicator.

I'll ask the question of an MOT tester I know - purely hypothetical of course !

Suggestions was that I get a GPS to give me speed indication

That's what I was thinking too - could a GPS be taken as a speedo for the purposes of the MOT?

I did wonder

Thanks both
I was hoping for a magic fix. Seems like my guy Pete knows what he's on about even though not a Saab expert -Jaguar trained some years ago so he knows about problems !
Ironic that the gearbox was completely replaced just before I bought the car !

I cycle to work most days and rarely go anywhere. Running a printing company takes most of my time

Suggestions was that I get a GPS to give me speed indication

Thanks again. Time to ponder.

My first post !

Hope you can help

I'm told that the only way to fix my speedo is to take the gearbox apart.
I can believe it, but I'd much rather have an alternative
My guy has spent a good couple of hours on it and he is good, although not a Saab expert
Anyone help please ?
