9-5 Mirror removal
« on: 04 April 2012, 11:44:02 AM »
I would add to the list of bad bits the peeling paint on the door mirror housings, which is also starting to happen on the door handles and roof rails on my MY2002 estate.

Hi Collywobble, mine too. Can anyone tell me how to get the mirror housings off for repainting? I know there was a post on the old site about how to sand down and repaint, I'd prefer to do that with them off the car rather than use masking tape. Thanks in advance.

Getting the mirrors off a 9-5 is easy!  I did it twice in the last fortnight! :)

There are four bolts.  Three around the front of the window area under the "triangle and one right at the front in the door shut.  The plastic door surround at the top around the window just pulls off.  Start at the front when pulling it off.  The rear end is tucked into the door car for an inch and need to be detached more carefully.

When removing the mirror from the door there is also a rubber spigot that is jammed into a hole.  You may need to lube this up when refitting.

And I have two connectors.  The second one is only on the cars with the folding dimming stuff. I think.  My old 2002 car only had the one connector.  But the bolt fixings are the same on all years.

Here's the pictures:

Of course, if you just bin the "Mk2" (MY2003-on) mirrors and fit the "Mk1" version instead, these have black plastic instead of painted metal, so they don't fester.

I busted the nearside mirror, and the cost of getting a pair of good Mk1s from a scrapper was about the same as getting one slightly bubbly Mk2, which would have left me with one very scabby and one slightly scabby and a lot of refurbishing work.

They are interchangeable, both mechanically and electrically AFAICS, just styled slightly differently. Purists need not apply.
Nobody likes a smartarse - until they need one.

Thanks Will,

Even I can cope with removing the mirrors, trouble is SWMBO will moan about how long I take to do the job!

When I get home to my main computer, I will try and move the mirror stuff out of the "Review your 9-5" thread.  Hope it doesn't get lost.

Lost my door mirror tonight - entire housing (glass and folding mechanism) so need to get another one as it's driver's side - PFS have them for just under £200, I wonder if they are easy to fit?

damage to door panel can be done by the guy who sorted Sabine...

Still got the pictures Will?

Got loads of pictures!! :)

You need to make sure that the replacement mirror has all the functions of the original.

They are all fitted with heated glass.
Are yours folding?
Memory mirrors that move with memory seat?
Auto dim glass?

The motors are different between "plain" and "memory".
Folding mirrors have more wires, so do auto-dim.

Do you have the original bits?  The motors are swappable, if you have the original and the new one is different.  The mirrors with more functions have two connectors in the door fixing.

But it's an easy swap if it's like for like.  Four bolts in the door.  One or two plugs.

Photos are on Photobucket.  Photobucket is down for maintenance at the moment.  They should reappear soon.....

Lorry disappeared, dark lane etc, etc....hopefully Saab Service Club can provide the items...I know it's not going to be cheap but I don't want to claim on insurance for this...door and wing took a beating (that's how close it was) but I know a guy in North Wales who's good at fixing bodywork.

That fourth bolt is a sod to move... >:( I don't have the right tool for that one... need to go to Homebase between showers.

Neo's has a mirror that has 3/4 of the features for the driver's side, but all the features for the passenger side... Will be glad to be able to use DE again soon.

I've never has any problem with the bolts.  Have they changed them from hex head to Torx or something?
