« on: 27 May 2015, 11:11:32 AM »
Now this is a worry...
Did a dipstick check,as you do.
Oil is off the stick.
Ouch!
When did this happen?
This car Never eats oil. And now it does.
What the?

if there arn't any external leaks, either oil control rings failed or the seals in the turbo..is there any smoke out of the back,if it's burning there will be..

That's not necessarily true, they can burn enough oil that they empty quickly but with barely noticeable amounts of smoke.

Over what distance has this happened?

No real distance done. Less than 110,000km. But it is all short city stuff over months and maybe that's the issue.
Doing an oil change this weekend. It's been a while.
There's no smoke, no black stains on the bumper.
Only a small weep onto the block, and that can't account for the loss.

I imagine you thought of this already. Measuring the oil when the engine has been running will show the level to be near the bottom of the stick. If you measure cold after standing it will much higher.

So, flushed and dropped the oil. How much do you think came out? Over 5 liters! I usually put the old oil into the previous empty container. It nearly overflowed.
Which makes you wonder how the marks on the stick work.
I filled it slowly, checking it many times while adding a little bit each time, also taking into account the empty oil filter pot and drained cooler. Had to go back for another bottle! Lucky they were on special too. Six liters later, it is now on the top mark finally.
There must only be a liter from top to off the stick.
Not so worried anymore about oil loss either.
Gave everything a nip up and degreased and washed the engine down so it sparkles.
5W30 Fully synthetic in the belly.
Spins up faster now, and is quieter and tighter as you would expect.
All good.

there's not enough oil in the sump if this happens..

Was there ever a calibration of the stick done by the factory at some point?

I'm astonished at the amount oil actually expands when hot.

When dipping the oil, my routine is that I make sure the engine is properly hot, shut it down, then check the oil level after 10 minutes, but before 20 minutes has elapsed.
This ensures the oil is still warm when checked, but has had time to run back down out of all the oil-ways and galleries.

I think the method of checking - however you do it - should be consistent

Absolutely, the 'method' needs to be consistent every time to get a reliable reading.
Interesting that this version of the 2.0 engine needs 6 liters to fill it up to the mark again. Must be the oil cooler volume involved too. Annoying when you can only buy 5L in a bottle, so you end up buying two.

5 litres may be enough.  You can never get all the oil out with a sump drain.

There's an oil thermostat in the oil cooler (I believe) I've known a few cars to need 6l after drain and fill (most need around 4.7l) but the specified capacity I think is more like 6.3l which always suggested to me that some cars had a the oil stat stuck open. I don't have a copy of WIS to hand so my numbers may be a little off.

Just checked.  6 litres is the service fill.  Full capacity is 6.75.
