Good result :)

Saved another 9-5. See fewer and fewer about these days..

Hmm, from what you've said it's probably not worth it. I don't mind spending a few k on the car, though it needs to be reliable and needing a spare gearbox doesn't sound promising.

Keep thinking of getting a new car but it would be cheaper to keep the 9-5 and spend a chunk of money to get it upgraded.

Thinking of a complete suspension upgrade, possibly new turbo, more power, repairing bits that need doing along the way. I want the comfort which it has, but I want it to handle a lot better with even more power than it currently has.

I know of the local Saab Indies to me (Malcolm Miles / Bond Street Saab / WMSS) though not sure if they'd be the best to undertake this sort of work.

I believe Neo Bros / Abbott / Saabflight / JamSaab do this sort of work, though none are near me and I've heard good reviews and bad about some of them.

Any other recommendations for somewhere close to Leicester / Coventry / Tamworth / Nuneaton etc or would it be worth the travel to someone further afield?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Re: 2008 9-5 Aero misfire
« on: 29 July 2018, 11:10:15 AM »
10 months on and this happened again.

CEL came on with very lumpy running after flooring it 130 miles into a 160 mile journey last week. Had an ODB2 reader and it diagnosed P1300 (misfire) again. The light went off on it's own as I pulled into the services, but I cleared it anyway - it's been fine in a couple of hundred miles since then.

I've had the DI cartridge changed, new plugs plus one of the hoses which was very dodgy (see above).

Am I correct in saying that two other causes could be the CPS and the Fuel Pump?

There is a very high correlation between this happening and me having put in super unleaded / higher octane fuel. I've put higher octane in approx 4 times whilst I've had the car, and this issue has occured 2 or 3 of those times. I'd say about half of the times this has happened, it's had super unleaded in it.

I'm told that if anything, the car should be running better on Super Unleaded. Does this point to the fuel pump? Not sure when the fuel filter was last done. Had a major service in May but can't find the invoice to see if they did it.

Not sure what this is as it's done it close to where I live though not for a while. Has happened in at least two different locations. Will keep an eye on it.

Had to use this for the first time since buying it last Wednesday when travelling back from Brighton. 130 miles into my journey the CEL started flashing accompanied with very poor running (running on 3 cylinders at a guess). Limped to the next services and had a go with the device.

I'd misplaced the instructions for it after a house move, so had to work out how to use it on the spot. It was very intuitive and easy to browse through the menus and to get where I needed to go.

Found the error - P1300, though it didn't have a description in the database. Google solved that and it was the misfire that I'd had before. Cleared it, and the car has been fine since. To be honest the CEL stopped flashing as I manoeuvred round the car park at the services before coming to a stop. I have a separate thread about the misfire, so will post in there about that.

Another Saab had pulled up next to me whilst I was in the services - chap got out of his car when I got back to my car and we chatted about the Saabs:

Never had that with any other marque.  8)

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Central Locking / key fob issue
« on: 24 July 2018, 07:45:57 PM »
A couple of times now my key fob has not worked. Tried pressing to lock the car many times and nothing happens. Can lock with the key no problem (all doors lock). There are no messages on the SID and I've replaced the battery in the key fob a few months ago.

After a while I'll go back to the car and it works fine.

Any ideas what this is likely to be? I would have thought there'd be a message on the SID if there was an issue..

Test drove an S5 this afternoon. That was definitely quicker than my 9-5, though not as much as a gulf as I'd have thought. Different league for handling though...

Off-topic chat, Help, Advice, General motoring issues / vRS Octavia
« on: 21 July 2018, 02:14:59 PM »
Went to see this vRS Octavia today (245 BHP):

Although the Octavia handled and stopped far better than the Saab, it did not feel quicker than my 9-5 Aero. We were two up on the test drive, but even taking this into consideration, I'd say the Saab was quicker.

The DSG gearbox also seemed very slow witted - even compared to my 10 year old car. Salesman said they learn your driving styles and it should get quicker, though I expected better. Even in Sport mode, it didn't seem to kickdown very quickly.

By the time the DSG had decided what it was doing, the Saab would have already gone.

The ICE in the Octavia was brilliant, and it was high spec with Adaptive Cruise, Pan roof, electric heated seats etc, etc.

However, I'm not sure it was worth over 16 times what they'd give me for the 9-5!

I did want to see a Superb 4x4 280BHP as well, but it had sold. The Superb's look better than the Octavia's inside and out, and I would have been very tempted if it was still available - assuming it's 5.6 to 60mph felt quicker than my 9-5.

On the way home, I was thinking maybe I should just spend a bit on the Aero instead as it'd be a lot cheaper than "upgrading".

Main issue I have with mine is the handling. I've already spent some money on rear shocks and drop links, though this solved some issues but introduced others. Are there any Saab specialists in the Midlands who are good with suspension / handling? Don't mind spending the money if I get the improvement.

PS. Just seen there is a Hirsched 9-5 Aero 2.8 4x4 for sale, though it's very strong money and nowhere near me :(

Fitted last May. There was vibration back then. My fault for not pursuing I suppose.

Had the drop links and rear shocks done yesterday at a major service. Car definitely feels better. Floatiness has gone. Not had time to test it fully yet, so can't comment on Torque Steer / general handling etc.

Got them to check for that oil leak that was mentioned on the MOT. They found nothing at all - bone dry. This is Malcolm Miles Saab Specialist, so I trust them more than the MOT place I took the car to (never used them before). I was very dubious about the "oil leak" as I'm not using oil and there's no drops on my drive / garage.

It was in for a major service yesterday and I asked them to check the brakes. They put it on a machine where they spun the disk and said it was warped. To be honest I think it's been like this since they were fitted. Most journeys you don't feel anything, though there is vibration on hard braking from speed.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Warped brake disk
« on: 22 May 2018, 09:53:07 AM »
I have a warped brake disk on the front nearside.

Would I get away with replacing that one disk and pads for both sides, or would I be better to replace both disks? They're only a year old, so the other one should have plenty of life in it.

How many miles has the car done? Is this the original Turbo?

Hope this doesn't affect the holiday too much.
