Glow Plugs
« on: 29 January 2013, 02:59:01 PM »
I only used the car once while the snow was down it started instantly but it was missing so bad I thought it might be trying to escape ( or I'd not done a very good job of fitting the No3 injector lead ). It cleared and ran fine after a few seconds. It was about minus 2 at the time and now the temperature has gone up it starts and runs as it should.
I'm thinking one or two glow plugs not working. If none were working it would have been harder to start.
Is there any way of checking them without removing them first or should I just replace all of them ?
Anything I should take extra care with then I remove them.

Forgive me for asking, but when starting do you wait for the glow plug symbol to go out before cranking?

You are forgiven Petemate.  Yes I wait for it to go out.

It did have a slight misfire when the engine was fully up to temp that was slowly getting worse but it was cured a few weeks ago with the No3 injector wiring kit and it's still running fine, it was just that one start when it was about minus 2. A couple of blips on the gas to around 2500rpm and it was back to it's normal smooth tickover.

If there is snow or ice I normally use our Freelander so that minus two was probably it's only sub zero start this winter.

If you ever find out what is causing your misfire please let me know - mine has been doing this (intermittently) for some time and I have still not solved it  :-\

Some days its fine, doesn't miss a beat - other days its ropey. There is no pattern to it

I've checked the glowplugs and two are not working.
The car is a 2007 1.9 150bhp.
Most parts places give the length as 152mm and thread M9 x 1.00mm.
Part numbers I'm getting are,
Saab / GM  93 178 411
Bosch  0 250 203 001
Beru   0100276015
NGK  6092  YE07
The only site I can find that gives the details for the NGK one is Mr Auto and they give length 109mm thread M10 x 1.00mm.

I don't want to get the wrong ones so could someone confirm I have the right part numbers and Mr auto has the wrong dimensions for the NGK.

Saab part number is correct.  Can't say what the others are.

I never realised glow plugs were that cheap, £32 a set of 4 for a TTid!!

Do they have a service interval?

YE07 are either 8mm or 9mm self regulating
Y-534J are 10mm

Must admit my TTid looks more like YE07's in it than the NGK sites Y-534J...possibly

I wonder if the dimensions on the Mr Auto site are for the TTid glow plugs then.

As I've never heard of PureGlow ( £22 for 4 ) or Glownition ( £30 for 4 ) I'm ordering the GKN YE07's at £42.

Other than getting the engine hot first does anyone have any tips for removing them.

Thanks  Alan
