12.2v is not a charged battery....

13.2v is nearer charged.

I'd say dead/dieing battery, or a bad lead (earth), or the +ve at the battery

Any update on this problem?
I hope by now you have been able to solve the mystery.

The car has been up and running until now - new starter motor and new battery as well as a dam good large service (oh and a glued stick knob!! Thought I'd lost the spring but luckily found it down the side of the drivers seat). I've noticed a whistling after service, thought it might be the exhaust flexicoupling as that went at around 2.5 years old and sound is similar, but I have just found a split pipe which I will put in a new post, shortly.
