Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 1.9 tid 2009 2nd gear popping out
« on: 24 November 2015, 09:44:55 PM »
Very occasionally at low speed in a q, second year pops out.

No other issues although have had a slight transmission whine for about 20k

2009 car with 153k miles.

Nearly all motorway miles in 5th. Original clutch/dmf

Please tell me it's not syncro and I need a new box.

Thanks!!

Just got a speeding notice from my trip last month. I was in a German hire car travelling from Paris to near Toulouse. Mondeo diesel estate. Hate to say it but actually a nice car with boot to match my 9-5.

117k in a 110 limit. That's just over 4mph over the limit! Harsh!!

45€.

And I thought I was religiously sticking to limits... Must have been an area where motorway limit was reducing and I missed it...

Should take my own car as I usually do next time then they can't trace me..

Had an interesting experience yesterday evening! Taking daughter no 2 to Glasgow for the evening, and along the motorway started to feel a pull to the left. Got off the motorway and into a GPs car park. Tyre almost flat on front left.

I'd been running my Avon ice touring to the end of their life but still seemed to have 2.5-3 mm left evenly across the tread so planned to replace at service in June. I check my tyres regularly, and can't believe I hadn't noticed the damage I found as described below....

Couldn't find any obvious puncture so thought I'd chance pumping up and carrying on as only about 10 miles to go. Wouldn't get past 25 psi so had to use the rubbish space saver. I've only ever lifted the car with a trolley jack before - the cars own jack is rubbish! After some skint knuckles, got wheels swapped and found a surprising inner edge to the tyre! Whole of tread seemed fine, but inner edge had a huge step as the sidewall meets the tread and a section had worn through. All the more surprising as had wheels off about 5k ago and all seemed fine, when tracking was also checked. Car was running straight and no vibration!! Other side is fine. Thankfully it didn't blow out completely given I was on a busy motorway.

What would cause such a step?

Anyway, space saver rubbish! I had to go 60 miles home again in wet weather. Luckily found a late opening tyre place in Glasgow and bought a cr***y tyre from them for £55 (autogrip grip 200....) as thought it would be better than the skinny that meant I had to go at 50, had no cruise or abs...

New tyre seemed fine despite cheapness!

Think I'll buy a second hand wheel as a spare and put the new tyre in it, then get the 2 new front tyres I was planning anyway.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Grinding 5th gear
« on: 17 April 2015, 07:19:46 PM »
2009 9-5 TiD manual with 140k.

All generally fine, but unless fully warmed up, synchromesh getting caught out going into 5th.

Clutch seems fine and none of the signs of dmf issues.

Sound like clutch or gearbox??

Thanks!!

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Wheels fit?
« on: 09 February 2015, 08:57:03 AM »
Should I be ok with clearance if I fit 7.5x18 ET41 to a 2009 9-5 estate using 225/45/18 tyres.

I know the offset is smaller than spec so theyll sit wider and if I use 45 profile I'll get a bigger circumference (but 45s are not only cheaper - they should help stop making the ride too hard).

Mainly concerned about clearing the arches.

Thanks as ever.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 1.9tid manual

November 2009 car with 125k.

Noticeable but not loud at the moment. I thought it might be a belt pulley but these seem fine.

It seems to be engine speed related. Disappears when clutch depressed.

Sound like could be DMF starting to go? If so, assuming motorway use , so not changing gear often, dos it likely to fail quickly?

Thanks as ever

After 7 years of ownership we've finally decided to part company with my wife's 9-5 2.3t auto estate. Still like it a lot, but mpg and car tax now annoying, especially as she is doing a few more miles a week now.

Had got quite far with a volvo v60 but was really disappointed on the test drive. Seats not great, dash really fussy and my wife found visibility of where the bonnet ended poor.

Had a PCP quote for it of £1k deposit and £350 pm for 4 years with something like 9k guaranteed value at end. Was happy with that budget so, last Thursday, asked the Mercedes dealer whether they could do a c class estate auto for that. They said, yes, could do a petrol for about that and diesel for about £399. Hurrah thought I - fancy the petrol. Same power/ torque as the 9-5 in a smaller car with much better consumption.

Went in yesterday and after an hour and a half of usual flannel, got a formal
quote. £1800 deposit and £399.98 pm for the petrol. I said that's not what he's quoted. He said that September deals were now closed (two working days after he'd given me figures) and that he'd not given me a quote but an indication! An indication, I pointed out to him, that over the 4 years was £3,200 less than he now wanted. He was surprised when I just left and couldn't seem to understand that there was a £3,200 difference. He later called to offer another £150 off!

Last car I bought by email without ever talking. I think I want to do that again....

It's enough to make you keep
Your old car...

An elderly neighbour has a (very) low mileage 2008 9-3. When he brings his drivers window up it gets to the top and goes down again. Is that pinch protection not knowing it's reached the top? Any idea if its an easy fix?

I've got a whine from around the alternator area. Cars done 120k - just about 5 years old. Likely to be alternator, or something else on the belt? Pretty sure it's not in at the timing belt which was done at 75k along with water pump.

Thanks!

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Oily down below
« on: 23 May 2014, 08:00:43 PM »
Just after diagnosing (with help frm here!) a broken pcv valve, I noticed oiliness underneath - sexe picture.

Could this have anything to do with the breather? If not, any usual suspects?

Thanks

Can't decide. The pictured car is very similar to mine

Can get these for £200.

And 4 pirelli p7 blue for £400

Need new tyres anyway...

For a 9-5 would I get 225/40/18 tyres?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Alloy Cap Logo
« on: 19 March 2014, 02:28:37 PM »
I've had one fall off, although the cap is intact. Rather than get a new cap thought I'd just try getting a sticker. The cap is I think 60mm but there's a little rim so I'm guessing either 56 or 58 mm for the sticker. Looking on eBay there are lots to choose but none say the right size to get, just a range of sizes. Don't thing I have the means to measure a circle that precisely  - anyone know the size I need?

Thanks

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / P1334
« on: 13 March 2014, 08:47:42 PM »
Wife's car - 2006 9-5 2.3t auto with 110k. Got a cel about two weeks ago but it went off itself. Came on again today and got it read as P1334.

I've cleared it and will see if it comes back.

Car was given a full service in November.

Running absolutely fine - nothing untoward.

Does this suggest DI or anything else I should check first?

As ever, thanks.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 cup holder
« on: 10 March 2014, 08:05:14 AM »
Anyone got instructions to replace the dash cup holder? I have a used replacement.

Please tell me you don't have to remove the whole dash?

It's a dame Edna.

Thanks!

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Steering wheel badge
« on: 08 March 2014, 09:40:49 PM »
Anyone tried to remove one? Is it in any way integral to the airbag set up or can I just use the strong thread trick run down behind it to loosen the glue?
Thanks
