9-5 1.9 tid 2009 2nd gear popping out

Very occasionally at low speed in a q, second year pops out.

No other issues although have had a slight transmission whine for about 20k

2009 car with 153k miles.

Nearly all motorway miles in 5th. Original clutch/dmf

Please tell me it's not syncro and I need a new box.

Many years ago I had a similar problem with Mk. 1 Ford Cortina.  I used to drive with my arm resting on the centre console with my hand resting on the gear lever. This was sufficient to put pressure on the gearbox internals which resulted in it jumping out of gear, I think it was fourth however.

Unfortunately I suspect that you will find it requires either a rebuild or a new box.

Got the linkage adjusted and seems ok for now. I didn't see how 2nd gear would be done - the car is almost always just cruising in 5th.

I'm wondering if it's time to change though. Had the car 5 years and put a lot of miles on. I travel 80 miles a day so perhaps time for a newer car with a warranty...

If I do sell, I'll miss the car a lot and not sure what I'd get?

Keep the car.  Put the money you would spend on another car into a repair pot for this one.  I'm sure it will work out cheaper in the long run.  my car is nearly 9 years old.  Just been serviced and i have no plans to change it.  Just spent around £1000 on a suspension renewal.

That's been my opinion to date but at 150 odd k miles, and given I rely on it daily to cover 80 miles or so, I do wonder if the inevitable is approaching.
