Car went into the garage today and once on the lift, it was clear that the seal on the rear LH drive shaft had failed.

Plan is to remove and inspect the seal.  if it's cracked it will be replaced.  If there are signs of damage, the diff will be removed and repaired.

And the fuel tank needs some rust treatment.

The Carlsson has an oil leak from the back axle.  It's sitting in the garden, and hasn't moved for a week.  This evening I had occasion to go down to the garden shed, and I thought that it had been raining.  But it hadn't. the rear window had shattered! :(  There's a small hole in the top corner.  I can only think that a bird dropped a stone. But I'll have a look around when it's daylight and see it there's a missile.

Announcements & Events / Saab Autumn Meet - Warwick. Sat 11th Sept
« on: 22 August 2021, 11:36:28 AM »
The SOC have arranged an autumn meet at Hatton Country Park, nr. Warwick, for Sat 11th Sept.  10.00am to 4.30pm.

The site has several attractions other than a field full of cars!  I believe that there’s a craft fair on at the same time.

I expect to be there. If my car is fixed in time, it will be the 9-5.  If not, I may be able to persuade SWMBO to take the train for her trip to Portsmouth, and I will come with the Carlsson.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Hidden rust...
« on: 11 August 2021, 02:59:05 PM »
I have a loss of power steering fluid.  I took the bumper off to check the cooling loop, but that's OK.  Removing the other underbody panels to look underneath, found a lot of wet areas which require further investigation.  But there was small bulge in the front of the metal bumper.  There's rust inside which has swollen.  A quick prod and a hole appeared... :(

Trying to remember where I've hidden the Hydrate 80 ::)

Today I bought a used set of genuine Saab roof bars for the 9-3 Carlsson.  They have hardly been used, and they fit as they should.  The only issue is that the bars are fitted with four 5mm socket headed bolts, and one is missing.   I checked the part number and Saab do a fitting kit of four black passivated bolts, four washers and an allen key for £23.60 + P&P from their approved suppliers.  Or I can go into Watford and collect four stainless steel bolts of the same size from the local fastening company for a total of £0.26...  I already have washers and several 5mm hex drivers.

It's a dilemma :D

We have a French autoroute toll tag that lets you drive through the automatic toll barriers without stopping.  We have had it for years, around 25...

It works by automatically billing you and then you pay by direct debit.  We bought it in France and it's worked all the time since.

Now we find that we can no longer maintain the direct debit with a French company from a UK bank account, and they require a DD for payment.  You can transfer money when billed with no admin charge, but it seems this has to be on a bill by bill basis.  A direct debit no longer works.  Seems to be a "Brexit bonus" :(

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 Door mirrors not moving
« on: 31 May 2021, 10:37:23 PM »
I might be in for a long haul. The door mirrors have stopped moving. Both sides. All fuses OK.  And the door switch connector seems to be connected. Tech2 can't move anything in "Activate" mode.  I'm beginning to suspect the memory mirror module.   The seat memory is working OK.  I will have to check the wiring continuity before trying a new module, and there are a lot of wires...

We are planning to go away to our grandsons wedding this weekend, so I went to tidy up my car and put some tools back in.  I keep most of them in the wheel well in the boot, in and around the full size spare wheel.

Today I lifted the floor and the top of the wheel, both metal and rubber were wet with condensation.  The same thing with some tools wrapped in poly bags. The bags were wet on the top, but not underneath.   I've not come across anything like this before.

It must be condensation because the underside of the lift-up floor is dry.  I cleared out the tools and there is no sign on any water ingress, drips or runs.  There is a roll of blue paper towels on the floor of the wheel well and they are bone dry.  The left side "shelf" has the spare DI unit wrapped in cloth. That is dry.  The right hand shelf has my socket set wrapped in a boiler suit.  That is completely dry.

I don't think there is any water getting in anywhere else.  The windows aren't steaming up since I sealed the new windscreen. And there are no bottles of fluid in the boot that could leak.

The wet part of the wheel in the picture is directly under the lifting floor, so no direct drips.

I'm at a bit of a loss.  Any ideas?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Jalousie failure - again!
« on: 07 May 2021, 04:26:01 PM »
Well that was embarrassing!

I was backing out of a parking space at the supermarket.  I was most of the way out and blocking the traffic when I needed to go forwards again before reversing right out.  But the gear selector wouldn't move out of reverse!!  Looked down and found that the flexy blind (jalousie) had broken off and jammed on top of the bit that was left. it took a few seconds of frantic wobbling to free it so that I could move.

The blind had already broken earlier in the year, but only exposed a small hole at the back when in park, so I left it.  This time a further short bit broke off and turned sideway and jammed cornerwise across the slot. :(

The original blind was replaced at the end of October 2015 after nine years use.  This one broke earlier this year after six years.  At least I know how to fix it now.
