Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Automatic gearbox repair shops
« on: 26 November 2023, 08:19:02 AM »
The MY08 appears to have a developing problem with the auto box. From cold it feels okay, though on occasions it is holding gears a long time. Symptoms usually develop after about 15-20 minutes of driving. It has poor acceleration compared to the other Aero also it seems very rough under heavy load. (My first though was brake binding, but it will happily maintain speed.) I've done a fluid change, but it's made no difference.

I suspect it may be the SLT as someone else described similar symptoms. I've toyed with the idea of getting the solenoids and replacing them myself, but I don't have anywhere to work on the car at the moment and it would be an expensive guess.

Are there any recommendations for autobox diagnosis and repair in Yorkshire? I know there are places down south but a full day trip each time taking both cars makes it unworkable. Has anyone used Automatic Transmissions in Huddersfield?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / MAF failure?
« on: 10 July 2023, 06:35:27 PM »
The MY04 estate has lost some of its go, so I've had an OBD data recorder on. The Airflow Mass Meter reading is at 0g/s most of the time on the recorded trips, and all over the place when it does read. It could be wiring so I will check it when I get chance, but the MOT is on 25th and I don't want it failing for lack of a working part. Has anyone experience with the failure mode on the MAF? Do they read erratically or is that more likely to be connection? I'm tempted to get one ordered, but with both cars to go through the MOT...

I'm trying to change the parking sensors on a MY04 estate. Mr Haynes says for 2002-on estates: "carefully prise off the rear bumper corner protection strips." Despite looking at videos (of 9-3s) and other people's posts and starting from the wheel arch end, I still can't get the things off! I've blunted two plastic trim removal tools trying to get any edge behind them, and put slight scuff on the edge of one trim when trying to push the top down, the bottom up, or the end in.

What am I doing wrong?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Wiring colour 2008 telephone connector
« on: 24 December 2022, 10:54:43 PM »
Maybe one of you guys can help. I've had an intermittent issue with the Parrot Bluetooth in this MY08 car, and decided to get in to have a look. The fitter was a total cowboy. Where there should be a nice 18 pin connector is... well, see for yourself! This is as I found it, I haven't unwrapped anything. No wonder there were random things happening. It might also explain the over the top incoming audio, if he connected the wrong leads. A complete muppet who shouldn't be allowed near a car.

I can make this safe, but I did want to check the I-bus as my new radio has a Canbus connection. I've found the connector diagram but it doesn't show the wiring colours. Does anyone have a table of them on MY08, please?

I've picked up a MY08 saloon to replace my poor MY04 estate. :'(

Another Aero so very happy. It has the navigation system and a Parrot CK3100, but the telephone audio level is ridiculously high. I've not got a manual for the navigation system and I couldn't find anything by searching here or elsewhere. Is there any way of setting the relative input level as there was in the MY04 (hold the Band button when switching on)? I'm going to replace the unit as it doesn't have a disk and is pretty dated anyway, but it may have to wait a few months.

My time spent fixing the housing for the driver's seat controls has been undone. My wife came back from work yesterday and said she must have broken it originally. The tale was she got out of the car at work and with her short legs and hip operation she had to slide off the seat to reach the ground, and heard a crack from the plastic. The controls now flap about again...

I'm not hopeful of a solution, but does anyone have ideas for how I could fix the seat controls so they can cope with a grown woman sliding over them?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Rear washer cleaning wheel arch
« on: 08 February 2020, 10:19:07 PM »
I've had the common blocked rear jet problem which I thought we'd solved, only for it to return to a dribble. On going back to the front of the car I found two puddles, front and rear of the LH wheel and sure enough, there is a leak where the clip holds the hose over the wheel.

The problem is how to get to it? I've had a look on WIS, EPC and the forum but not found any information other than it's a 6.4m length hose. I'm planning on junctioning the pipe rather than replacing all the way to the wiper as I'm limited on time at the moment. Do I have to remove the wing to get to the hose? If so, is there anything I need to watch out for so I don't cause other problems? I'll be working in the back lane so don't have anywhere to store the panels and will need to refit the same day.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Lid/hinge for front armrest cubbyhole
« on: 25 October 2014, 09:04:32 PM »
During a rather awkward retrieval of the coin holder from below the handbrake (thank you to the garage mechanic who pushed it down there) I accidentally pressed my elbow into the cubbyhole lid and broke one of the hinges.  I'm going to try and source second-hand, but I need to know what I should be asking for, and ideally a part number, if someone could help?  It's a MY2004 Aero, I presume the slide mechanism was standard.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Is this off my car?
« on: 28 February 2013, 09:48:34 AM »
Might be a daft question as I think it looks like more than a night's corrosion, but I'm hoping that if it is likely to be off my car ('04 9-5 Aero auto), you will able to point me at where to check.

Coming back on Tuesday night, I was ready to reverse into a gap. As I released the brake and started moving back there was a loud 'clong'. It was dark, but nothing was visually amiss. Yesterday, I had a look under the car and it was sat level, and there wasn't anything obviously loose. However, I found this in the road right where I had been reversing.

The measurements are: overall length = 21.5mm, threaded length = 16mm, thread diameter = 4.9mm, allen key size = 4mm

The warning light has come on for my Xenons and they are now tipped down a bit. A quick check with my clone Op-Com reveals it thinks the problem is with the front COG sensor, but I can't get the connector unplugged to see if that's the problem. It looks as though there are clips that should be pushed in on either side as you try to remove it, but it still doesn't want to come. This may just be corrosion and it needs brute force, but I want to check before I break something. As I only had the standard scissor jack and the front wheel tucked under the sill, I was reluctant to stick my head in there to examine it any closer! Any advice on disconnecting it welcome.

Whilst replacing the sooty vac pipes with shiny silicone, I've also found that the NRV which goes between the throttle body and somewhere down the back of the engine has snapped, the same as kevpuk posted here: http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=538. This probably explains the stalls my wife has experienced, and the lack of go part way through acceleration.

First of all, can anyone confirm part number 5955927 is right for this assembly on a 2004 9-5 Aero? I've got the numbers 9549528 off the rubber hose to the throttle body and 160703 off the broken white NRV.

Secondly, I would like to repeat kevpuk's request: how easy is it to access the other end? I struggle to get my hands into many places in the engine bay, and if it needs access from underneath I'll admit defeat right now and get my friend to do it on the ramp.

Thank you.

I've just fitted the 16" rims with the winter tyres - and there's not a lot of clearance at the front! I reckon about 5mm. It panicked me a bit, but the wheels rotated freely, so I dropped it down and gingerly crept it backwards a couple of turns, then forward. All seems well so after a slow drive up and down the street with the windows open, it is parked up again.

Brembo say a minimum of 3mm clearance, which seems very close when you're travelling at motorway speeds. I guess I'm looking for some reassurance from others with experience of close fitting wheels!

I'm trying to find these connectors in the UK.

I found the image on http://www.golddawg.com/GDRR_2009_Revo_P2.htm

EDIT: I should say that it is impractical for me to use any other connector as the one on the lights is halfway under the shower, and I wasn't asked if I could connect them until we'd built it!

Unless I've missed them, none of the usual suspects carry these things, and the only proper model shops I knew have closed. I know I can get them from the states, but the shipping cost is not worth it. Also, unless I do the connections this week, the shower will be pushed into the corner and I won't be taking it out again to wire up lights we probably won't use.

After reading sgould's post on the TurboX tracking http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php/topic,309.0.html I'm wondering if this also applies to the 9-5 with ESP?

When I had four new tyres fitted to the estate, they minimised the rear toe to reduce wear on the inner edge. (Not happy about throwing away Vredesteins with 5mm of tread!) Since then it has occasionally felt like it was braking a wheel when moving off with plenty of lock.

Of course, this may be something on the ABS ring, but I've not noticed it any other time, such as when slowing to a stop.
