Software updates for old LCD TVs
« on: 04 February 2021, 10:45:17 PM »
Hi all, I've got a 26" Hitachi LCD TV that was my Mother's. I think it is around 10 or more years old. Quite a good TV, but it has an issue with the sound drifting out of sync with the picture. I went through the menus and it is on an early version of the software, and trying to do a software update doesn't do anything. Hitachi customer service got me to do a power down, factory reset and re-installation/tune. These seemed to help initially, but then things drifted back again.

Someone suggested it was likely to be software or firmware related, but that you can't get the software updates for them now, so I'd be better off buying another TV.

Anyone know if there is any route to getting the software updated to whatever the latest level was?

IIRC, software updates at that sort of age may have been by USB

Yes I think there is a USB port into the TV, but a TV place told me you couldn't get the software updates for TVs older than about 5 or 6 years old. Not sure I believe that, because they will be stored somewhere.

If you share the model number and current firmware version you're more likely to get some help. I'd ask on somewhere like avforums too.

Well someone on AV Forums tried to fid out but also drew a blank so presume there are no software updates available any more :(

So I was looking at our old Sky+ HD box, and it has coax connectors in and out. So I was wondering if I can use that as  Freeview box (we have no satellite connections upstairs) with the aerial input?

Anyone tried that and got it to work?

I lso had a search & couldn't find anything

IIRC, the Sky boxes were simply a modulator / passthrough, no receiving ability

As Carrera says, the coax connections on the Sky box are just for passthorugh and modulation- there's no terrestrial receiver in it.

Mmmm, so the Sky box will connect to the internet, but it won't then do anything. Just keeps saying it is initialising. SO we cannot even access stuff that was recorded on it!!

That means it is either going on Ebay, or it is going down the tip!!!!!!

Recordings were only viewable with a current subscription / viewing card anyway.

It's a spare hard disk
