Smell of gas in the boot/trunk
« on: 31 July 2011, 10:41:19 PM »
I dread the possibilities here guys... After reading of the potential for stress cracks in the tank...

No sign of gas on the garage floor or on the tank, and none in the trunk itself. All hoses are/appear to be in great shape. Clamps are tight.

Have you checked the right angle plastic elbows on the top of the fuel pump (best done with the engine running then you will see any small leaks under pressure)?

Sounds like it could be the infamous cracked/broken filler neck. One of the vent (at least I think they're vent) pipes can crack/break on the filler neck.

I had this problem on an '88 900, the smell was strongest in the boot, I fixed it with a small lengh  of tubing from the boot into the petrol filler cap under the trim ( figured it must have been caused  possibly by a blocked vent pipe in the filler system)
