XWD Carlsson - probable transfer/diff/LSD problem
« on: 16 February 2016, 11:08:33 PM »
Over the last few weeks I've been wondering if our Carlsson was in trouble.  Now I think it is.  It's not doing slow speeds well.

For a while I've noticed a bit of what I can only describe as "axle tramp" when going forwards on full lock.  But I put it down to the system trying to sort out grip in extremis as it otherwise drove well.

But today we got caught for a short while in very slow traffic on the M25 and another symptom occurred. Driving along at around 5 mph on a level, straight bit of road, there was double clunk, exactly like driving over a joint in a concrete road.  But there were no joints.  My wife said it has been like that for a week or two.

There was no sideways twitch, just the sensation of a clunk, fairly frequent and irregular.  As soon as you got to normal speed, everything is smooth.

So, is it a problem?  if so, which of the three items is it? Transfer box, rear diff or rear LSD?

No warning lights or messages yet.  But I'll check for pending codes tomorrow.

Not sure- probably worth a read of Ruscoid's problems over on UKS as that had lots of links and info for specialists and others experiences.

Update...

Checked with Tech2 - no codes.  Nothing disabled.  Drove around forwards and backwards on full lock. Still "tramping" a bit. Still no codes.  All graphs showed that the right bits seemed to be working.

No leaks.

That sounds like the diff lock or torque lock I had on my Subaru. I also had the double clunk when slowing up sometimes. Hopefully though it doesn't end up like mine did with new gearbox as it was electronic diff locking and not releasing fully and that was inside the box!

Is it not still under warranty Will?

Warranty?  No.  The car is nearly six years old.

We have had the car since June 2014 and the secondhand warranty ran out over a year ago.

Oh - sorry Will.

Try Googling Torque Lock and see what comes up. That's how I found out what the issue was on my Legacy. It's more apparent when on gravel and tight lock as it's not releasing inner wheel fast enough so it's trying to turn at same speed as outer wheel.

Hopefully your's isn't the same issue - it was rare on Subaru but i got it. Some 4 wheel drives seem more prone.

It does feel as if one wheel is not releasing.  I'll have a search...

The Saab suffers from "sludge" - what's new!!  ::)
I wonder if it's ferrous.  If it is, a magnet might trap it somewhere out of the way.

Thorney Motorsport do a repair/upgrade service.  There are pictures of the issue on their site.

It does sound like the haldex.
On the Freelander 1 a sign that the VCU was failing was a rear wheel skipping when you reversed on lock as it wouldn't let the front and rear axles turn at a different speed. ( VCU is a viscous coupling that would allow front and rear axles to turn at a slightly different speed but locked up if the difference became too high and was replaced by the haldex on the Freelander 2 ).
As the haldex uses fluid pressure to lock the drive to the rear wheels a leaking valve can cause your problem. On the Freelander 2  the haldex can be disabled by pulling the pump fuse leaving you with just front wheel drive.
