CEL flashes and what they mean.

2 flashes - MAP sensor
3 - Intake air temperature sensor
4 - Coolant temperature sensor
5 - Throttle position sensor
6 - Oxygen sensor (lambda probe)
7 - Fuel / air mixture
8 - EVAP valve

How do you get the flashing to occur?

They only apply to Trionic 5 models, which were the turbo petrol engined cars from around 1994 to 1999.

If the CEL is illuminated whilst driving, there is a stored code.

Turn the ignition on, wait for the Check Engine light to go out, and then count the number of subsequent flashes. If there is more than one code, there will be a pause of 2 seconds between flash sequences

Loosely on topic, is there any way of entering a diagnostic mode, I'm particularly interested in the 150 Tid, but it could be for any SID-equipped car.

On the Rover 75, for instance, you get in by holding the trip reset button in for several seconds, and then by rapid button pressing to scroll through the various test modes.  These include a readout of actual engine coolant temperature and the like.

I know that you can do things on the SID in some of the early cars, at least up to 2004 in the 9-5.  There is a procedure called "open SID". 

I've not seen this on any of the newer cars with the SID in the instrument panel under the speedometer, only on those with the separate SID unit.
