heater fan noise
« on: 28 September 2011, 09:14:13 PM »
The heater fan has suddenly started making a noise like leaves have been sucked in but the further I travelled it turned to a whirring noise and a bit of vibration. Something caught round the fan? and how difficult is it to reach and where from. Through the grille under the windscreen or upside down in the footwell. Any info gratefully received. Thx.

Is the drain clear?  The fan blades may be hitting water.

Thx SG. Geordieland's suffering a drought at the moment and we've had no rain for days and this noise just started tonight after the hottest day for months. If I knew how and where the fan is I can check but I'm away Friday for a week so everybody has a week to make suggestions and I'll check when I'm home. Fan bearings might be gone.

It was a leaf stuck in the fan. The fan is under the plastic scuttle cover. The wiper arms have to come off and I used a puller to get the left one off but not enough room on the drivers side as the bonnet was in the way so put a bit of pressure under the arm with a wide screw driver put the nut on and tapped with a hammer and off it came at the second hit. Typical car makers, put everything on dry and mix different metals and the reaction 'welds' them together. Cleaned the tapered splines and greased them and twenty minutes later all done with a quiet fan.

We've got a willow - it amazes me that I DON'T get the problem!

I do, however, regularly get leaves stuck under the wiper blades while the car is parked. How the hell does THAT happen???
