It's a tiny bit lower, but not much, especially as the Aero already has the sport suspension.

I'm not sure how they do it, but it's a lot more comfortable.

Picture shows it after fitting...

That's what we did to our 2002/3 launch model 1.8t.  The difference was amazing.  The original suspension was harsh.  `somehow the lowered kit made the ride better.

The Saab workshop manual, albeit written years ago, is fairly broad in the viscosity requirements.

0w/30, 0w/40, 5w/30 & 5w/40 are all approved.  but the important bit is the Dexos2 spec.  The only engine in the 9-3 that has a more specific requirement is the TTiD diesel.

I found the best price for a 5l can was Bill Jones at Saabits.com.  It will be GM 5w/30.

First photo is of the rear arch clearance with the self levelling original suspension.  Fingers are straight in.

The second is with the new suspension.  Fingers are at a slight angle.  But, there is a bit more stuff in the boot...

Supply of new ones is still there.  They are just £564 each…

I've not heard of repairs recently.  The cost may not be viable.  These are the self levelling Nivomat type.

No, the front is fixed.  I'll see how it drives in Germany with our luggage in the back. The difference is not really noticeable.

Joe has given me the old bits back and I have strict instructions not to throw them away, so that I will have the bits in case I want to revert.

The old shock absorber is completely gone.  It can be completely closed up with at least 3 inches of free play...

If it's the right shape, it should be fine.  I fitted a Nissen fan, complete, in my 9-5 and it's been fine.

That looks dead.  Has something got through the filter?  Can you find a blower from a breaker and just unbolt the fan, if necessary?

As mentioned in the general "What I did to my car" thread, I decided that a pair of self levelling shock absorbers at almost £1200 plus fitting seemed too much for a 14 year old car.  So I bought the PFS kit that is similar to the one sold by esaabparts in the US for the Turbo X Ultra sport suspension.  It was fitted this morning and I have just driven it 50 miles.

First impressions are that it's fine.  A tiny bit lower at the back, but barely noticeable.  On sweeping bends it seems OK but a bit "looser" with a tendency to suggest oversteer, but only in extreme.   We shall see how it goes with a load on the German trip.

In the middle of last week the car developed a very loud knock at the rear.  That has gone. :)  So it was the shock absorber in its death throes.

Dunno!  But I do clean the brush in water, so it should thin it a bit.  I would dilute a small bit and try it on a bit of test rust.  If it dries like normal it should be OK.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Re: Changing instrument unit - MIU

I’ve not done this, but from talking to Karl (Noobtune)…

The existing MIU will only need to be divorced if you plan to use it in a different car.

If you fit an MIU with a turbo gauge, you need to do some trickery with the VIN.  The next bit is secondhand info.  You need to fit the new MIU, which won’t work.  Then with Tech2, go to DICE and change one of the digits to that of a car that would have a gauge. I can’t remember if it’s the body one or the engine one.  At this point you need to marry MIU. The MIU should work and the turbo gauge should operate.

Then it gets a bit vaguer… I think at that point you go back to DICE and revert to the original VIN.

The other bit to bear in mind is whether the “new” MIU was divorced from its original car.  If not, you will probably have to run through the divorce routine before you start, but knowing the original VIN of the donor car.

That’s all a bit sketchy but I don’t think I too far off.  It’s all done with Tech2 at the top level.  No SPS as far as I remember from the conversation.

Doing some routine checks today, including a check of the wheel nuts after changing the wheels last week.  As I was putting the torque wrench away, i found a screw on the floor.  it had fallen out of the torque wrench :(   A special shouldered bolt, but it needs some threads to repair it.  There aren't any. It must be 50 years old.  New wrench ordered.

It does sound as if the bearing has failed. If the fan is run with the axis horizontal, and the bearing has failed it could have dropped and be resting on the casing.  Can you feel the fan?  Is it wobbling on the shaft?

Fingers Crossed.  I may have sorted a loose connection on the 9-5 airbag.  First time I've risked removing an airbag. :o

We will find out on a longer drive tomorrow.
