Does remap require brake disc upgrade?
« on: 31 January 2018, 12:48:17 PM »
The brakes work fine on the Aero, but the discs have been an advisory on the last couple of MOTs so I expect they will need doing some time soon.
I think I have the 302mm discs on the front.

If at some point I look  to remap from 210bhp to 250bhp, would it be advisable to upgrade the brakes to 314mm (which means new calipers as well)? If so, do the rear discs remain their standard size, or are there bigger ones available for those too?

It's only the front that normally get upgraded.

There are two options on your car for Saab brakes.

314mm which was use on the early Aeros and also on the more powerful diesels.

345mm which is the standard on the TurboX and Carlsson.  Also offered as the Hirsch upgrade for the 9-3 and 9-5.

All the above are also on various Vauxhalls, usually the VXR version.

If you upgrade, you will need the full kit.  Discs, pads, callipers and the calliper carrier brackets.

if it's an aero you should have 314mm discs already, look at the caliper square plate in the center see pic..

You have the 302mm brakes.  Saab/GM bean counters reduced the size of the Aero brakes after a year, or so.  Only the very early 2.0 Aeros had the big brakes.

Once I get the 17" alloys back on the car, perhaps they won't look so small :)

As long as they are man enough for the 250bhp, then no worries :)

The 9-5 Aero had 308mm brakes as standard.  When I had the 280hp Hirsch upgrade on the old silver saloon, the 332mm Brembo upgrade was optional.

When I got the 300hp upgrade on the current car, the 345mm brake upgrade was compulsory, according to Hirsch.  But there is at least one "dealer special" 300hp Hirsch car out there which only has the engine upgrade and a big (not-Hirsch) exhaust.
