Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / high beam not staying on
« on: 08 February 2022, 08:02:04 PM »
Hi all

2008 9-5 aero estate

high beam will not stay on, I can flash and keep high beam on if I hold the indicator stalk pulled up toward the steering wheel but goes off as soon as it is released, related fuses all look fine, I guess relays are the next place to look/swap out

any suggestions appreciated

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / rough running, CEL & P1312
« on: 14 June 2021, 01:36:18 PM »
Hi all

this happened to me yesterday afternoon (2008 Aero Estate), third journey that I was having to make after being out in the morning. Very sluggish and unresponsive, needing to go hard on the accelerator to get moving. Pulled over, engine didn't sound right clearly missing, stopped and only on restarting did CEL come on. Cheapo code reader came up with P1312 which WIS is telling me is "Combustion detection cylinder 1+2, open circuit / short to B+" - clearing the code worked briefly but came back so abandoned my journey and crawled home.

I guess I need to pull the plugs on cylinders 1 and 2 to see what state they are in, not done many miles since they were last changed - only the weekly grocery run and occasional trips to the dump, all less than 5 miles. Reading here and elsewhere that code could indicated that the DIC is on it's way out so will have a close look at that - anything in particular I should look out for, cracks etc.

the other thing that is troubling me is when I was out earlier yesterday morning, on leaving the house was sure that the gauge showed I had ~1/4 of a tank. After a journey of some 5/6 miles it was well into the red and the fuel light was on. Not wanting to risk it and knowing I was going to be using the car again later in the day I filled up from a place I wouldn't usually use, with 95 rather than the usual 99, because that is all they had. Coincidence ? I expect if it were missing due to that if that there would be another/different DTC showing.

cheers

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Bluetooth OBD II
« on: 17 June 2019, 08:45:08 PM »
I picked up an ELM327 Bluetooth OBD dongle for my 9-5, tried to get it set up with the torque app on my android phone, it just cycle es through all the different protocols but never actually connects to the ECU.

Does anyone use this setup and can advise which protocol to use

Cheers

Off-topic chat, Help, Advice, General motoring issues / Roof box/bag
« on: 29 April 2019, 09:58:00 AM »
Hi all

looking for folks thoughts on options for roof boxes or bags  - I already have a set of bars.

I have a 9-5 estate which swallows a ridiculous amount of gear for camping trips, a trip we have planned for this summer we will have an extra passenger so smaller load space and extra luggage. As a result I am considering options for a roof box for light but bulky items such and folding chairs/bedding etc. Obviously with a box long term storage of the thing then becomes the next headache, I do not have a garage and my shed is already bursting at the seems, so a bag could be a viable alternative provided it is weather proof.

If any of you use a box or bag with your SAAB than seeking your opinions

thanks in advance

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / wash wipe woes
« on: 02 July 2018, 12:50:49 PM »

windscreen wash is not playing ball, had a poke around yesterday definitely no whirring noise from the pump, didn't get too far into things as it was far too nice a day to be spent tinkering, also having a black car meant everything I touched felt like it was on fire.

Both the headlamp and tailgate appear to be fine, am I right in thinking that windscreen, lamps and tailgate each have their own pump in the wash bottle.

cheers

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Stubborn folding mirror
« on: 08 April 2018, 11:23:48 AM »
Nearside mirror has an intermittent problem of folding back out, sometimes it goes part way, other times refuses to budge - folds in fine.

Is there something in the mechanism that can be fettled? I recall reading somewhere that lubrication was a bad thing as the actuation for the folding mechanism is a clutch type so squirting in WD40 would possibly make it worse.

Thanks in advance

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / denso nav disc stuck
« on: 09 October 2017, 01:36:54 PM »
denso nav touchscreen audio combo is playing up,

the touch screen isn't coming on and it isn't responding to any key presses nor the steering wheel controls, the drive in the unit sounds like it is trying to read a disc and not being successful, tried pulling the related fuses but as soon as the fuse goes back in it starts whirring away again. The unit is connected to a parrot hands free that does still operate

if I pull the unit out to try to remove the disc is that even possible to get into the drive once it is removed, TBH I don't recall if there is a disk in it

thanks in advance

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / estate rear suspension
« on: 29 September 2017, 08:36:03 AM »
Hi all

'58 plate aero estate rear suspension seems to be not behaving properly. Unladen, 1/2 tank of petrol on level ground all seems just about normal - 600mm from bottom of alloy wheel to inner lip of wheel arch both sides. Add some load and it seems to list to one side, offside rear rim was barely clearing the top of the tyre, to the point where wasn't possible to put a flat hand between the two, near side still had plenty of clearance tyre to rim. Noticed it last weekend as we were away for a few nights, some load spread out evenly between boot and dropped seats but not masses.

From the vin plate letter codes I do not have auto levelling suspension, so thoughts move to springs, dampers, bushes shims etc. car has done ~68k any thoughts would be appreciated

Off-topic chat, Help, Advice, General motoring issues / Parrot Mki 9200
« on: 12 November 2016, 01:51:36 PM »
just installed in my 9-5, calls and music working ok but can't get a music playlists to work on a USB thumb drive, the manual that came with the 9200 suggests playlist is possible from that source but doesn't provide any details on how to go about it, the parrot support forum isn't any better

so, do anyone here use playlists on a 9200, if so how?

thanks in advance

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / disco strobe xenons
« on: 20 February 2016, 10:31:17 AM »

'58 9-5

When I switch off the headlamps they spend 2-3 seconds flickering on-and-off light a strobe, before eventually powering off. This doesn't happen all the time, but appears to be fairly random and can happen after short (<10 miles) or long (>100 miles) journeys

Not yet had a chance to check if there are any codes showing but any thoughts on what I ought to be looking at

TIA

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Parking Aid and WIS frustrations
« on: 11 December 2015, 08:56:12 PM »

58 9-5 aero estate

SID is telling me there is a fault with the parking aid, cheap op-com gizmo is reading code B2950. That code in WIS is a check of voltage on pin 1 of the connector from the parking aid ECU to the sensors, that connector is located in the bumper beneath the near side tail light cluster, so it's a bumper off to get in about the connector. That pin is at 12V, so battery voltage

Back to WIS and no matter what test result is selected, pass or fail, ends up at the same next step in WIS, i.e. replace the cable from the parking aid ECU to the connector - somewhat frustrating

I have limited experience in WIS so is it me or is WIS this frustrating ?

any light that can be shed on this will be appreciated

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / gutted
« on: 22 September 2015, 09:49:47 AM »

At the end of July I picked up a 58 plate Aero estate, tricked out with all the bells and whistles and serious amount of poke

Got home from work last night to find some toe-rag had rear ended ended it and failed to stop, was parked in the bay outside the house

Car was not in a condition that is safe to drive so was recovered by the insurance, lots of head shaking and sucking of teeth would suggest it is the last I will be seeing of it

Police have a lead but I am not hopeful of it being able to recover costs from them even if they are found

gutted

Quite liking my new purchase (58 9-5 aero estate) and after a new set of tyres she sounds much happier than with the tomato skins that were on it when I picked it up.

The car has the dense (sic) sat-nav and no aux, currently weighing up a handsfree/aux install to allow phone and iPod integration. I have ordered some bits and pieces based on this thread in order to complete the install.

my current thinking is to run the usb/ipod/aux from the kit into the cubby under the armrest in the centre console - I am often in the car by myself making the physical connetion to the ipod in a place readily accessible from the driver's seat is preferred - obviously that would be outweighed by the complexity of the install. So could do with some pointers on how easy it would be to run cables from the rear of the stereo to the cubby in the centre console and what I need to remove in order to do that.

An obvious alternative would be run usb/ipod/aux cable into the glove box, that would be second choice but as I said would depend on the complexity of the preferred option described above.

thanks in advance

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / sudden loss of power
« on: 28 March 2015, 05:08:44 PM »

Today i had one of those scary moments, accelerating along a slip ready to pull onto main carriageway , sudden loss of power, engine light on, turbo gauge up in the red, then oil light on, praise to the baby jesus that there was a bail out lay-by

there is oil in it, it is a little darker than I would expect, was changed last August and done ~2000 miles since

where should i be looking and should i be concerned about my bank balance

cheers
