T5 Coil in T7 car
« on: 07 April 2022, 02:51:19 PM »
Hi,
HELLLP! I am relatively new so please excuse stupidity on my part! Now ... I have a 2001 9-3 Aero convertible. I am slowly going round and learning about it and doing bits. I believe I have a trionic 7 engine (oil cap on the LHS and MAF pic attached) BUT I believe it's got a T5 coil pack in it.

The question is this - is it safe to run the T5 dic on a T7 engine? I have seen various posts on tinterweb saying you can temporarily run a T7 on a T5 to get out of jail BUT my question is what can happen if its the reverse as I believe I have . TBH the car has run always fine as it is but I have had sporadic crankshaft position sensor warnings.

I've found a good used t7 pack from a 2005 9-5 Aero. Will this fit? Is changing it out the best / right thing to do?

Many thanks in advance for any help o' wise Sabb ones coz I'm panicking a bit that I might break my beloved Saab!

I believe that the difference between the red and black cassettes is that red runs on DC and the black on AC.  But the risk is that the ECU will not be reading any knock sensing.

You can use any later black DI cassette.  The last official Saab one is 5559955, but it has recently been replaced by a new offering from Orio/Saab Parts.

Looking at the photo, the breathing system has been remodelled.  I'm not sure that it's quite right. It would need a closer look.

Hi - thanks. Ok I guess that would explain the occasional Crankshaft position warning. I'll go and get me a T7 cassette asap. On the breathing may I ask what was it that caught your eye? I have bigger / can do better pics if that helps.

I do love this car and want to do right by it and well, mid of get it back where it should be. So, all help is appreciated.

Thanks again.

It's the blue pipes.  They are not original.  It may be OK, but there are a lot of pipes in the system and it's difficult to say exactly what's been changed.

And added to that, the original system in the 2001 car  (well, 1998-2003) was flawed and Saab issued several updates, culmination in "version 6".  In 2004 th engine block was modified and the engine breathing system completely changed.

I fitted v6 to my 2002 car.  See picture below.

It looks like the fuel tank venting (EVAP) has been modified too.  Again it may be fine.  It's something Saab did  themselves in 2004/5 onwards.

I think you need someone familiar with the engine to have a quick look.  Whereabouts are you? there may be a Saab meeting near you, or a Saab Specialist nearby.

There may be other mods to your car.  There's an aftermarket strut brace across the back of the engine between the tops of the front suspension struts.  So who knows what else has been done?

There's also a diagram of the pipes in the EVAP system with the pipe that can be removed marked in red.

Thanks for getting back so quick! I'm on a learning curve here.

As to the EVAP system that's on me. It wasn't boosting properly (IMO) and looking at it all the lines were tired / split etc so I went and got some new one way valves and silicone hose, also a new Boost pressure control valve - because while I was digging around I discovered that 20 year old plastic and hose doesn't stand up to well to my cack handed investigations! Argh! All I did was measure what was on there and replace it piece by piece ... taking one bit off then following it and replacing it. So it's entirely possible I did a 'stupid' or someone else had put it on wrong and I have just replicated their mistake. I know the previous owner was a doctor and it had a full history till I took custodianship of her but because of that had kinda believed / hoped that what was on there was right. The after market strut brace is a surprise and I'm interested in that!  But, now its knocked my confidence a bit with the T5 DIC as well and I found out it had the wrong plugs in ... though I've sorted that with NGK platinums as per spec.

I'm in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Thanks alot for the advice and notes!

Bushey? Really?! :o

So am I.  :)

I would be happy to have a quick look.  But I'm getting quite ancient and would struggle to crawl about underneath, but under bonnet pis OK.  I also have a Saab Tech2 diagnostic computer which I play with.

There's a local Saab group in Beds, Bucks and Herts.  We are meeting for lunch on Saturday at a pub near Letchworth. There should be a dozen or more cars there and you might find someone with more experience of modifications than me.
