Wheel refurb - a winter DIY project  ;)

47
Well worth going to the trouble of checking. While your wheel arches are off, stick some builders flashing to the backs and inner arches. It will lower the drumming noise from the road, especially in the wet ;-)

48
Heard good things about this.
When treated make sure you give the inner wheel arch a good lick of Hannerite or similar.
Finally ALWAYS wash the inside of the wheel arches when cleaning the car - prevention is better that cure, though you probably know this already .  :D

Why not clean them up, fill in any dings and respray using rattle cans. It is surprising what can be achieved with a little patience and time, plus the satisfaction your did it yourself.

Hi David, It's not the public facing part that really concerns me, filling in dings and respray doesn't worry me. Its the pits and corrosion on the inner part that affects getting a good and durable seal with the tyre...

I had similar issues with the Incas on my 99, so ended up cleaning everything and using Hammerite silver smooth (happens to be an almost exact colour match) on the face and inner - one can per wheel. That was quite a few years back (guessing around 10 years) and they still don't leak or need refurbishing.

Looks good.
Auto petrol isn't the most economical around town, but should give you mid to high 30's on a long run.
Road tax will be high.
Did notice it had the brushed headlamp surrounds. This was a Hirsch option, though not sure if it applied to later cars, so might be worth checking the Vin number with them - you might end up with more than you expected ;-)
As a comparison on a manual 9.5 DE Hirsch I an currently showing 34.8 urban and get around 40mpg at 70'ish.

I read somewhere a bag of BBQ charcoal on a large tray and left overnight, works well. You could then use the charcoal for a BBQ!

Steve, it will cost a bit more, but if you intend on keeping the car, get the rust cut out and put some new metal in.  ;)

Hope you can make it will. Doesn't seem right, a SOC National without you being there!

55
Always worth asking on a forum for recommendations.
I know of at least three I would recommend.

56
I know, I would Will.

I am lucky that where I live we have a number of SAAB specialists and like most garages, when you have a good one you tend to stick with them. Might be worth going back to the garage concerned. If nothing else, if they are made aware of the problem(s), they should, in theory, not repeat it on customers cars in the future.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Re: DRIVER'S DOOR SEAL
« on: 08 August 2018, 09:16:16 AM »
It is very straightforward. I changed one on my drivers side DE 9.5 last year. You simply pull the old one off, then with the flat of your hand, hit the new one on. No glue or cutting required - only make sure the shape is in the right position.
The one I used was passenger side as they are the same.
