2002 9-3 (Turbo) Fuel Gauge Not Working
« on: 13 August 2014, 05:08:41 AM »
We had a new fuel pump installed. Old one quit. But while the new pump works fine, the fuel gauge won't register more than 1/4 tank - even when full. (Gauge worked fine with the old pump.)

At a half a tank, or less, the gauge reads empty and the warning light comes on.

Any thoughts? P.S. We tried a different (new) fuel pump...with no change.

P.S. The mechanic who installed the new pump *did not* disconnect the battery or remove the fuel pump fuse before working on it. Could he have caused an electrical short?

Welcome! :)

I don't know the answer, but was the replacement pump a genuine Saab one or a pattern part?

Maybe the tank level sensor got broken when the new pump was fitted.

They can be quite fragile.

Not sure if there is a baffle in the tank for the 9-3 or not but if there is they can get dislodged and jam the sender too. The way to check would be putting different resistance across the level wires or remove the pump and move the float and see what happens.
