Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Aero going slow
« on: 27 September 2011, 12:34:12 PM »
Any ideas for 2002 Aero?

In the last few months I have replaced my Turbo, throttle body, coil pack and CPS as all have failed or starting smoking.

It has been running very well and in fact the last week it has felt stronger than ever.

On my way back this morning I noticed it felt not as strong and the boost was only going half way through the orange ( I know it is a fake ) but it seemed to reflect how the car felt.

I pulled over popped fuse 17 out and had a quick look under the bonnet. Nothing obvious and put the fuse back in. Car was back to normal and felt great. 20 miles later it has done it again. It is driving OK just feels a bit flat and the boost is not going as high as normal.

If I put my foot down it feels OK just a lot less powerful than it should.

I have a bolt up the third pipe of the boost controller already.

Any ideas before I try and find a friendly with a Tech 2?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Oil consumption
« on: 30 August 2011, 02:37:20 PM »
Just checked the oil level on my 2002 Aero and it was hardly touching the bottom of the dipstick. :o

It has hardly ever used oil before but recently I have replaced the Turbo to stop the smoking on the first start of the morning and replaced the crank case breather system to latest spec.

I replaced the oil about 1000 miles ago when I cleaned the oil pickup and it was at the correct level then.

No obvious leaks and I have not been ragging it.

Where has it gone?

Is this normal on a car with 106,000 miles on it?

Will monitor it very carefully over the next few weeks.

My previous Saab's have never used a drop of oil between services. Should I be using thicker oil?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / £50 waisted on the road.
« on: 22 August 2011, 07:41:42 PM »
I popped into Oxford today and noted a strong petrol smell, thinking some car in front of me was overfilled I dismissed it and carried on.

On arriving I noticed it was stronger than ever, looked underneath and noticed it poring onto the road :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I popped the cover off under the rear seat to find the pressure coupling was almost out and I think only the cover had kept it in place.

The yellow plastic piece that keeps the fuel couplings in place had broken so allowing the pressure coupling to pop out.

I tie rapped it to the other pipe and packed some cardboard under the cover to get me home.

When I started the car the low fuel light came on and I had lost half a tank in 15 miles :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I popped £20 in to get me home.

Luckily I had saved my old fuel pump from my 9000 and the yellow bit on the top unscrews, also luckily they seem identical.

10 mins later I had swapped the offending plastic piece over so I am up and running again.

Q1 Is this a common 95 fault?

Q2 Why should this happen? There is normal pressure at this point and the filter was only replaced 2000 miles ago.

Q3 The yellow plastic was very brittle, is this normal?

Q4 My old 9000 item seems to be holding or should I order a new one

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Rear shocks on an Aero Estate
« on: 18 August 2011, 03:28:46 PM »
Last night I did some high speed cruising in my 2002 Aero Estate.

I noticed it seemed a bit soft on the rear over bumps so I suspect the rear shocks are on there way out.

I have been quoted today £100 a side for replacements.

I am trying to keep the ride comfortable, what experience do you have of replacement rear shocks?

If I am doing this is there any thing else I should be replacing at the same time.

The guy at the motor factors was not sure if an Aero had sport suspension or not, he has quoted if it does but do all Aero have sport suspension or was that an option?

Any tips on doing this job?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Is this a record
« on: 11 August 2011, 01:25:47 AM »
I did over 200 miles in my 2002 Aero Estate today.

I had an appointment but left with plenty of time.

I filled the car up ( £108 :o) and reset the average fuel consumption thingy on the display.

I clicked the cruise on at just under 70mph on the trip there and back on the motorway.

Near home I looked across and to my surprise noticed this

Is this a record over 200 miles ?

I normally see high 20's or have seem mid 30's before but never this high.

The fuel gauge is not even down to 3/4 so it must be correct.

Can a new turbo make this much difference?

Not sure I have time to drive around all the time at just below 70mph but it makes you wonder how much you would save in a year if you did.

My girlfriends 1.5 diesel Metro only does 55 and you would not be travelling any quicker than I did today

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Replaced my Turbo today
« on: 07 August 2011, 08:19:06 PM »
Replaced my Turbo today on my 2002 Aero.

Well no smoke on startup so hopefully that will fix it.

Not quite as easy a job as it looks but no too bad

I started at 1 and fired it up at 4. :)

I have been for a drive and maybe its me but it seems to be pulling stronger.

Will do a few hundred miles this week and I will change the oil next weekend.

Car has covered 106,000 miles, a bit disappointing for an Aero turbo.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Base Boost
« on: 05 August 2011, 08:13:08 AM »
What is the base boost for a 2002 Aero?

I presume it is set up by applying the brake pedal and accelerator and seeing how high it goes?

What happens if it is set to high? Does the ECU compensate?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Anybody bought one of these?
« on: 04 August 2011, 01:01:07 AM »
Been looking into a new Turbo for my 2002 Aero, Saab want about £750  :o

Been quoted about £400 for exchange units from various suppliers.  :-\

Then I trawled Flea bay. There are some copies on there for about £300 for just the cartridges, they do come with a 6 month guarantee.

Then I found these in Oz  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270781535982&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
They are genuine according to the supplier.

Anybody had dealings with these people? Or is if it seems to good to be true it probably is?

Where do you buy a genuine NEW Mitsubishi core from in the UK?  My local Turbo supplier wants £600 plus VAT :o

Still thinking about a used one but how long will it be before that goes?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Lacking boost
« on: 26 July 2011, 01:26:31 AM »
I have done over 300 miles today in my 2002 Aero and had an odd problem a few times

First of all it happened while I was down to my last 50 miles in the tank and the car sputtered a couple of times, the pretend boost gauge also dropped as the car slowed even though my foot was quite hard down.

I refilled the tank ( £100  :o ) and drove off thinking maybe it was fuel starvation.

It was fine for a couple of hours and then it happened again while I was overtaking and pushing hard.

I backed off for a couple of miles and when I pushed again it was fine.

I have a bolt in the 3rd hole of the APC valve, the throttle body is only a couple of months old aswell as the DCI pack. Plugs and fuel filter were done 1500 miles ago.

Any ideas?

My Turbo does puff on start up some mornings, could it be that letting go?

Thanks

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Climate control
« on: 22 July 2011, 12:30:27 AM »
I am not sure if I have a problem with my Climate control.

If I set the temp at high teens because I am hot it never quite seems cold enough. The system is charged correctly.

If like today I want to be warm I end up turning it to 26 or hi and that never seems hot enough even though warm air is coming through the vents.

On my 9000 I never used to touch the temp setting. 21 always seemed just about right.

I have calibrated the system as the battery had been off a while back.

My guess is the sensor ( where ever it is ) is faulty or the heater valve is playing up, if it is stuck slightly on it would be adding hot to the cold and only allow some heat through.

Any thoughts or is this just how 9-5's are?

Personally I like to be cold or hot when I wish not just a little cooled or slightly warmed.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Puff of blue smoke
« on: 11 July 2011, 07:36:35 AM »
I have noticed that my 02 Aero sometimes has a puff of blue smoke on start up. Some mornings it is there for a few seconds and others no smoke at all.

I have fitted the latest PCV kit and that made no difference.

The car has done just over 100k so is it likely to be the turbo?

Would thicker oil help.

Could it be something else?

If it is the turbo how long is likely to last if it does this?

I have seen it is possible to change the seals on these Mitsubishi turbo's, has anybody done it?

I have been quoted £400 for a reconditioned turbo, is that about right?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Exhaust prices
« on: 03 July 2011, 11:30:54 PM »
I need a new exhaust for my 02 Aero estate soon. :'(

Have been looking at the various options and with things as tight as they are cant afford one of these very nice stainless systems.

Looked at the usual suppliers and my local factors and all seem to want several hundred £££ for a cat back system. My local exhaust centre wanted £450 :o

I have had a look on German Ebay and I can get a complete system for about £130 including the shipping.

Are these systems available here in the UK? I purchased one a few years back for my 9000 Aero from Germany and the quality seemed good and was still OK after a couple of years.

Are all 4 cylinder exhaust systems the same apart from the tail pipe trim?
