New Saab 9-5 (2010 on) / 2011 95 tid
« on: 08 January 2020, 09:54:59 PM »
Hi, I've just purchased a 2011 95 tid. Its a magnificent car, great driver and the missus is even impressed.
The high gearing takes a bit of getting used to though.

I'm aware that there are issues. I would be grateful if somebody could clarify the oil pick up 'o' ring issue.
I'm aware that the oil pick up from the sump travels through a gallery in the sump. An 'o' ring seals this gallery to the block. This 'o' ring has a life of 50k miles due to heat from the exhaust which is at close proximity. Failure leads to complete engine meltdown. I have read that this issue only effects twin turbo units, 180BHP and not the 160bhp units. any insights?

Do these engines sludge?

Are there other issues I should be aware of?

I'm considering a DPF and re-map job to improve durability and mpg, any thoughts.

And, where is everybody, only a dozen or so posts for this model.

Looking forward to your response.

Mark

Hi, I've been through the wars with my 2.2 recently. I have 205k on the clock.
I had bad misfires under load and the tech2 pointed to the injector pump.
However, changing the fuel filter solved the problem, the filter was treacle black.

I then had a split inter-cooler hose, ok sorted that.

Now, while cruising at 75mph a gradual hill will trip-out the cruise control, Prior to tripping out she gets a bit juddery, like a slight miss-fire. Under load she is very smokey, black smoke. After several trip-outs of the cruise she goes into a limp mode which allows about 75-80 mph on the flat. A brief stop and restart has her back to nearly full power. I fitted a new air filter, no change.
Is this the fuel pump on the way out.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 95 2.2tid auto box swap
« on: 19 October 2015, 07:10:49 PM »
Hi, I need a little help before I part with my cash.

My 04 95 2.2tid auto box has failed, virtually no drive, switch off, restart and she runs for a bit, all over the place, revving up, wont rev etc.
Fault codes P0734 O and P0743 A, 4th and 5th lock up and drive ratios issues.

I tried another gearbox ECU, no joy.

I've identified 3 failed solenoids, however:
1) I'm told that fitting them requires extensive calibration
2) There's a good chance I've toasted the box anyway, I drove 60 miles home start stop.
3) The oil was medium brown.

Replacing solenoids could be high risk.

I can get a second hand box from a 2002 petrol.

My Numbers are  FA57A01, this is a 3 yr old recon box.
The replacement is FA57A03

Is this box compatible?

You thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 2.2 wheezing sounds.
« on: 27 April 2015, 06:59:42 PM »
Hi My Y04/5 2.2 diesel estate developed a strange wheezing sound today. if I accelerate hard at 2000rpm she makes a sound like air escaping, the power is a bit lumpy also. Engine light came on.
I had a leaking dump valve on a 95 2.0l, this sounds a lot stronger.
Any insight appreciated.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 2.2 Tid Thermostat.
« on: 13 November 2014, 07:18:24 PM »
Hi 2.2 tid, 2004 estate.
My temperature gauge is slow coming up and does not reach half way, suspect thermostat.
However, I was quoted 90 quid, a module seemingly. Is this correct or is there a cheaper option.

Hi all.
Easy one,
Is the starter motor on a 95 2.0Ltr EP 2001 the same as a 2.2 Diesel 2005?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Oily smoke
« on: 04 April 2013, 09:34:03 PM »
Hi all, I need to pick your brains.
95 2.0 EP 2001. 165K Mls
70mls into a trip I slowed for a low speed limit twisty bit of road.
I put out vast clouds of blue smoke, initial conclusion was Turbo seals. Due to traffic and the road I had to continue for 4 miles, I could hardly see a yellow DHL van behind me.
Pulled into a service station, left her running and was still generating a good bit of smoke. Turned off and went in to buy oil. Now, I could purchase a breakfast roll, Madeira cake and any quantity of rubbish but no bleedin oil.
After 10 minutes I fired her up again, no smoke and running like a watch. I drove 9 miles and got a can of oil. Topped up with 2 litres.
I drove for a further 70 miles, running fine. Did my business and left, as I pulled onto the road and I put out another cloud of oily smoke, I had to keep going due to traffic, made a decision to proceed to see what would happen, the smoke stopped after a mile and hasn’t been a problem for 400 miles.
I read a post that identified the oil pressure relief valve as a suspect in 95 smoking, is this the case and if so where is it and what can be done with it.
Any other causes would be gratefully received.
Recent history is: The turbo seems to be fine, sump was dropped 6 months ago, plenty of sludge which had seized the turbo. The turbo was recovered and has been fine since. Fitted rev 6 breather kit.

Thanks in advance

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Blue smoke on start up.
« on: 01 December 2012, 03:28:14 PM »
Hi again

I had the blown turbo, repaired, did the sump drop, 70% blockage of the strainer and what a goo at the bottom.
I dropped my sump at 90k mls, pretty clean, I have used fully synthetic  every 10k since, however my oil goes pretty black after 5 k. Could the bypass switch be a problem? and can I determine if it’s functioning correctly?
I’m 2 k after the sump drop and the oil is starting to discolour.

I just came across another thread that talked about the oil bypass valve being seized. The thread stated that the oil no longer went black after replacement. This was a 2012 thread, I’ll attach if I can. Being dumb I can't attach but here's the header.

Blue smoke on start up......

What I need to know is the part number and where it may be available. Is it easy to fit.

Serious question, Could this be a major contributor to the sludging problem that besets  us all.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / DI Cassett
« on: 29 November 2012, 10:03:23 PM »
Hi, 9-5 2001 2.0ltr LPT
I've done everything on this car bar the DI cassett.
I'm getting a slight stutter coming off the overrun, ie just applying the throttle, had it about a week now and seems to be getting slowly worse.
I's this a DI cassett problem?
I know I shouldn't run with a red cassett, but I have 2, can I check by swapping without doing damage.

thanks in advance.

Mark.

PS Turbo still strong. 4K up.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Good Turbo Story
« on: 24 October 2012, 11:28:47 PM »
2001 95 2.0l EP. Turbo went down 4 weeks ago. Seized.
Extracted the unit with great difficulty, copious amounts of wd 40, soaked in diesel for a day. Attacked with a vice grips to turn it, got it a bit free but very stiff. On reinstalling, no good.
On advice from a truck man I added a slick 50 type oil enhancer. 1 week later I added 1 ltr of ATF to the oil, a very good cleaner. Ran around for a week, 350 miles.
Having extracted the turbo I now knew that I could get the compressor housing off in situe. This I did and found the turbine seized.
An 8mm ring spanner fits the end of the compressor wheel nut, I turned this back and forth for about 2 hours, turning the engine every 15min or so to add oil to the shaft.
After 2 hours I was able to turn the unit by hand, more oil,and more turning resulted in the unit getting easier to turn, but still relatively stiff.
My wrists gave in at this stage, put her back together, changed the oil and then went for a spin ( excuse the pun ). I expected nothing.
The turbo is boosting stronger than ever, no strange noises and the car is pulling strong from 1500 rpm. 300 miles up and happy days.

Has anyone else tried this.

PS I think its a Garrett T5

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Noisy front suspension
« on: 25 June 2012, 11:12:47 PM »
Hi all, here we go again.
My 2001 95 SE 2.0EP, 150k mls, has now started creaking and groneing at the front suspension. I can only hear it accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear and generally at low speed.
I recently replaced the rear shocks and have noticed the fronts dont seem so good anymore.
i'm aware that front suspensions give trouble, can anybody shed any light.

I can also hear a wheel bearing going west, however i can't detect which one. any light.

Thanks in advance  :D

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / What suspension have I got
« on: 21 May 2012, 11:22:24 PM »
Hi Gents, I need to know what rear suspension I have fitted to my 2001 2.0EP estate.
I'm sure she's lowered, the only identification is a blue/green/orange tag with the numbers in the different colour bands:
5 (Blue) 062 (Green) 435 (Orange).
A tire fitter commented that the system is high class.
A rear shock has failed and I need to identify the system before ordering replacements.
Thanks in advance.
