Exhausting question.
« on: 10 October 2012, 03:10:26 PM »
The rear box on my FPT needs to be replaced for only the second time in over 200,000 miles.  The part is no longer available from Saab, although the box for an Aero is, although for £180.  So will the Aero box fit my FPT mid section, or should I go the after market for £80?

Thanks as always.

The middle silencers are all the same part number so I'd expect the Aero one to bolt on, I'd also give all the specialists and dealers (and car parts connexion) a look as someone will probably have the part you are looking for sitting on a shelf somewhere and be glad to get rid of it.

Yes, the fittings are the same throughout for all turbo cars- it was only the backbox detail that was different for the Aero.

Thanks for the help.  It looks like I need a middle section as well, which is also no longer available from Saab.  Talking to the parts guy at my local dealer, it seems that quite a lot of parts aren't available.  I haven't needed to replace anything for quite a while and hadn't realised that the situation was so bad.

The middle silencer has been unavailable for a long time now, something like 3 years so it pre-dates any problems with Saab going bankrupt. I'd suggest the simple reason is that people were no longer prepared to pay the price for genuine Saab items for the 9000 as there aren't so many around. I guess people either go for a stainless system (cheaper than genuine, but not cheap) or a cheap after market part to keep the car running a bit longer.

I managed to find a brand new Aero rear box and an almost new centre section from DCA in Bucklebury.  I even found the motivation to apply hammerite to match the colour of the car.

These guys http://store.eternalcar.com/ have a good selection of exhaust parts.  They're in Germany, but delivery to the UK was quick and cheap

Maybe if non original is an option.
Try fitting a BSR catback exhaust. Noise isn't much louder. but they hold well in my experience. I fitted them on several cars in the past 7 years and haven't seen one replaced yet.
