Replacement rear brake calipers
« on: 05 October 2022, 01:04:40 PM »
Hi all, I need to replace one of my rear brake calipers on the Aero as a piston has siezed, and it seems more cost effective to just buy new rather than refurb the ones I have. I wanted to get the rears refurbed, but they would only clean up to look like new, so rather than disable the car whilst I get these old crusties sent off to BiggRed, I though I just get a pair of brand new ones for a similar cost or maybe a bit less.

Looking online there is some variation in price though. On Ebay, I can get new aftermarket 9-3/Signum compatible calipers for around £70 - £80 for the pair. However, Saabits have them at around £70 + VAT each, and PartsforSaabs have them for around £90 each.

So just wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I believe I have the 292mm vented rear discs.

Or is there a genuine Vauxhall parts site that may have the compatible new parts for less?

you need to confirm that you have 292mm discs,as the calipers are different for each size disc..

As above, you need to ensure you get the correct calipers. Some models have solid rear discs, others vented, and they look almost identical, but the "jaw" spacing on the ones for the vented discs is much greater (20mm v 12mm thick).

The other difference, and the way to normally tell, is the calipers for vented disc have 38mm dia pistons and for non, 40mm. This is often stamped on the caliper as a code, something like FNC38

Just getting a leak caused by corrosion on the alloy sorted, so while the wheel was off, had a look. Can't really make out the markings on the caliper, but the disc is vented.

So I assume I do have the 292mm vented discs, so any recommedations for a pair of new rear calipers? I think some Vauxhall Signum/Vectra calipers might be compatible.

And is it worth me getting new carriers as well, as the old ones are a bit crusty?

Your call, but you can always clean up the caliper yourself & then paint with an enamel paint in whatever colour you want. Or simply black

Just wondering how good quality these are likely to be for £70 for a pair, when a single caliper at Saabits is about the same, and over £90 at PartsForSaabs.

Just getting a quote from someone on Ebay selling new calipers, now that I confirmed I have the vented rear discs. Hope to get a pair of calipers to give to our mechanic to fit. As the calipers will be new and shiny, is it work me getting some new shiny carriers as well?

Ok I got a quote from Saabits, and the rear calipers for 292mm rear vented discs are around £75 each.

There is a compatible pair on Ebay which are brand new and around £75 for the pair.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162889754350?hash=item25ecfc66ee:g:veAAAOSwAnhfafhr

So just wanted to gauge opinion, are the cheaper Ebay parts worth going for?

The carriers are not included on either, but there was new set on zEbay for around 40 quid to replace the crusty ones on the car.

Any recommendations?

The eBay supplier has a UK address and contact details and the warranty is two years longer than the three year one you would get from Saab Parts.  I’m not 100% sure, but I think that the Saab warranty is only valid if the part is fitted by a VAT registered garage.

The carriers are solid metal. Can you not clean them up and re-use them?

Hi Will,

sounds like you are guiding me to the Ebay parts  ;)  :) Which I am fine with, because I believe they are Vauxhall Signum/Vectra compatible too, and I hadn't spotted the longer guarantee. I don't think our mechanic is VAT registered, so the Ebay parts sound like they will be the way forward!!!

As for the carriers, yes I could just keep the once I have I guess. I think they have been painted at some point, so may need a clean and repaint when i get round to it. Priority is to sort out the binding rear brakes/siezed caliper first.

I did ask Saabits to quote for the rear backplates, which are looking particularly crusty on my car, but they don't have them in stock, and they are normally something like 60 quid each  :o :o :o

You can get the backplates on eBay for under £30 ea. Part nos 13168750 & 13168751. Of course you need to remove the hubs to replace these which could be a bit awkward. Online videos suggest the need to remove the sway bay link but WIS doesn't. I guess it depends on having just the right length socket and suitable access.

No need to buy new carriers. Clean them up, maybe paint them black or silver to match the new calipers.

Well I've taken the plunge and ordered a pair of rear calipers for the larger vented rear discs. I'll use my existing carriers, so that's OK. Just need a new set of rear pads.

Looking them up on a couple of sites and they don't seem to specify the disc type/size. Are the rear brake pads the same regardless of the disc/diameter/thickness?

Any recommendations for a good brand to go for? GSF are doing a brand called DriveTec for around £22, but they have Brembos that are £30.....

Or PFS have Mintex pads for £28, but not sure if they are the right ones? Although it quotes Saab part numbers......
