Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 alarm unit repair
« on: 07 January 2015, 06:52:59 PM »
Can anyone confirm if I take the siren unit off, to replace the batteries etc, is the car still driveable?

Also, can you get the CR2 batteries with the correct solder tabs anywhere else than the folk on ebay charging £20?
I dare say you could wire tab-less ones up somehow - has anyone done that? They only £1.50 each elsewhere.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Steel wheels
« on: 16 November 2014, 08:42:23 PM »
I've had enough of worrying about keeping my alloys nice! Does anyone supply a 17" steel wheel to fit the 9-5?
How about getting them electroplated/anodised in a colour of your choice?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 rear ball joints
« on: 17 August 2014, 06:11:18 PM »
Can anyone tell me the outer diameter of the ball/spherical joints that press into the trailing arm? I might be changing them and want to make up a set of puller tools.
Cheers - Dave

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 brake pipe fittings
« on: 10 June 2014, 07:44:42 PM »
Another question on brake pipes on 9-5.
I'm planning to renew the lines to the rear end (and the flexibles). Does anyone know the thread on the fittings - e.g. M10 x 1mm etc?
Plan is to chop and flare the steel lines at the front of the floor - join with a straight female connector - run new pipes back to the small flexible and then renew the small pipes on the trailing arms to the large flexis. It's the threads on the flexis I'm after I guess.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 brake pipe replacement
« on: 30 April 2014, 07:23:52 PM »
Does anyone know if you can replace the brake pipe runs under the floor (front to rear) without removing the fuel tank?
Is there a connector at the front bulkhead area or do the pipes run right up to the ABS unit?
At the rear I'm hoping they run alongside the front of the fuel tank and end in a connector near the front of the trailing arm.
Any info would be good. I've got to renew them somehow, by this summer.
Many thanks

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 9-5 exhaust heat shield
« on: 06 December 2013, 01:36:33 PM »
Death rattle turns out to be a loose heat shield for the long central exhaust silencer. A quick look suggests the horrid little welded screws have not yet snapped off the floor, but not sure if the shields has rusted out around the nuts, or the nuts have gone AWOL.
Has anyone had this before - any advice?

Cheers
Dave

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Roof bars with eye bolts
« on: 05 November 2013, 05:03:14 PM »
For those who like details..............pic of my roof bars to which I've just added eye bolts. Makes for much easier lashing of loads.
It's a much more involved job than on the 9000 bars, where you can get to the nut without dismantling.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Xenon headlamp levelling - help
« on: 09 October 2013, 07:49:05 PM »
I've got the dreaded warning lamp on and both lamps going to low position as they emit a juddering sound.
Does anyone know their way round the system? Am I right in assuming the only inputs are the front and rear "load angle sensors"?
I've already assumed because both lamps do the same thing, that problem is in the control system - not the headlamp units themselves.
I've looked at both sensors - connectors seem un-corroded but I WD40'd them for good measure. Rear one has smooth action, but the front one was a little bit rough in places - hard to be sure.
Is there a way to check the function of the sensors off the car with a multimeter for example?
At £60 ea and F/ R are different I don't feel like buying one or the other unless I know which is gone - if any?
Any advice?

Regds Dave (who now feels like he wants to buy a car he can fix without a £10k computer)

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Black DI - Part Nos
« on: 03 October 2013, 08:14:07 PM »
I've got 2 types of black DI units - both sold as OK for Saab 9-5 2005 2.3T.
Part Nos
#1      55562588 (under this sticker another No 55559955)
#2      9197559

Can anyone tell me if they are interchangeable or not - or whatever the story is.
The #2 part is what was on my 2005 Aero when I bought it.

Any help appreciated.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Front drop links
« on: 09 September 2013, 08:27:06 PM »
Does anyone know the nut size for these?? Looked at them today and they look like 18mm A/F ?!
Also, what thread is it? Looks like M12 but not the coarse pitch - is it the fine pitch?

I got the uprated ones from PFS to fit - they have a normal M12 coarse thread but stick with these odd 18mm nuts - for which I have no spanner or socket - yet. More expense!

Any info welcome.
Thanks - Dave.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Handbrake problem
« on: 24 April 2013, 10:54:25 PM »
When applying handbrake I get what appears to be a "bang". Eventually, after the looong winter, whilst swapping tyres around, I noticed that with the handbrake on the RH wheel has about 2" of free play at the rim!! I haven't stripped it down, but my guess is the pads are tight enough on the drum, but they must be slack to the backplate. Something clearly isn't right. Has anybody has this issue - and know what it is?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Scissor jack collapsed
« on: 13 January 2013, 04:26:27 PM »
Scissor jack collapsed last week - need a replacement but will probably buy a a non-Saab one.
Can anyone offer an opinion on whether the aftermarket jacks fit the jacking points in the same way? Are they all std in fitting on the bottom of the sill?
Looking at the Sealey 1.5T 58M at the moment.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Headlamp washers (Xenon type)
« on: 25 December 2012, 02:36:09 PM »
Hi All,
Is there a common failure mode with the xenon washers?
I've got the 20A fuse blown and as I have no other spare fuses or a multimeter (yet) any further experimenting will have to wait.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Timing / balance chains
« on: 25 November 2012, 05:54:51 PM »
I think I've got the usual timing chain issue - a slight rattle when cold for about 2 mins, then quiet.
84k miles on the std oil change schedule.
Can anyone advise whether that is likely to be just a stretched timing chain and could be fixed by winding on a new one?
Has anyone done that?
I'll get the full kit if necessary and change it all over for peace of mind. Has anyone done that? Is the PFS kit OK?
Can this job be done without lifting the engine out? or lifting the head?
Any advice / experience appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Battery issue
« on: 06 November 2012, 07:22:57 PM »
Just collected my "new" 9-5 which had been standing on the last owner's drive for some time.
Engine was a bit lazy turning over but I assumed (incorrectly) it would charge up on the long run home. It hasn't and every time it only just spins enough to start it.
I'm trying to calculate how long it should take to discharge, so I'm after the quiescent current drain of a 9-5 when its standing. Obviously the self dischage rate gets added, which I can find out from the battery maker.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Dave
