Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, my jump leads never came back to me so that wasn't an option. If the battery is failing after less than 12 months I will have to get out the receipt.

I've never known one carry on clicking when the key has been removed from the ignition. I guess there could be a relay somewhere that it's trying to keep open for a while after I've left the car.

Things didn't work out quite as expected. Came out to a flat battery, which is suspicious since it's a Yuasa 80Ah that has been on less than a year and it had good runs last week before sitting for three days. It wouldn't start with the Hilka battery pack - though I've yet to get a car started with that! After I had removed the key there was still a rapid clicking from under the bonnet so maybe something else is awry. I'm charging the battery and will see how it goes over the next few days, but may have to sort something else out first.

I am going to swap the CPS since it's relatively cheap and a spare is worth having. Silicone vacuum hoses appear okay. I also considered the throttle body as a cause, but I noticed sometimes there was a long delay before upshift which suggests valve body. I'm going to take it today and try sport mode but I probably won't get chance to push or test it on hills.

I'm tempted to get a replacement valve body and swap it over. Just need to make sure I get the right one! I've seen remanufactured ones for about £120+shipping.

Thank you for your follow up. I hadn't seen that thread, I will have a further read. I've read your posts here about cleaning the solenoids, but I'm chicken! I'm up to replacing them, not confident with pulling apart and cleaning.

The poor acceleration only manifests on longer runs. Looking back at the last long journey I did, I suspect it wasn't kicking down fast enough. I intend to do a long run on paddle shift and see how she goes when I select the gear in advance.

I don't have OpenSID - I will look into it.

The MY08 appears to have a developing problem with the auto box. From cold it feels okay, though on occasions it is holding gears a long time. Symptoms usually develop after about 15-20 minutes of driving. It has poor acceleration compared to the other Aero also it seems very rough under heavy load. (My first though was brake binding, but it will happily maintain speed.) I've done a fluid change, but it's made no difference.

I suspect it may be the SLT as someone else described similar symptoms. I've toyed with the idea of getting the solenoids and replacing them myself, but I don't have anywhere to work on the car at the moment and it would be an expensive guess.

Are there any recommendations for autobox diagnosis and repair in Yorkshire? I know there are places down south but a full day trip each time taking both cars makes it unworkable. Has anyone used Automatic Transmissions in Huddersfield?

I like! Are you keeping it as is or will you spray it first for a smoother finish?

Thank you for the suggestion. I've only just seen it and the estate is currently getting welding work done for the MOT, so I will get onto that when she returns home.

The younger car has lost even more puff! It felt fine when cold, but after a while going flat in the mid range and lacking power. The recorded trips show the MAF reading fine for about 10 minutes before going to 0 for the rest of the trip. Wiggling the wires didn't show any changes with the multimeter so I have fitted a replacement MAF tonight.

Thank you for the confirmation, I will take the multi-meter with me tomorrow.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / MAF failure?
« on: 10 July 2023, 06:35:27 PM »
The MY04 estate has lost some of its go, so I've had an OBD data recorder on. The Airflow Mass Meter reading is at 0g/s most of the time on the recorded trips, and all over the place when it does read. It could be wiring so I will check it when I get chance, but the MOT is on 25th and I don't want it failing for lack of a working part. Has anyone experience with the failure mode on the MAF? Do they read erratically or is that more likely to be connection? I'm tempted to get one ordered, but with both cars to go through the MOT...

I've only just seen your reply on new posts - thank you. In the meantime I had another go but still failed.  I will follow your advice and remove the bumper - I would have had it done in the time I wasted trying to get one bit of plastic out!

It might wait until I pull the back end apart to weld in the new arches.

Thank you again.

I'm trying to change the parking sensors on a MY04 estate. Mr Haynes says for 2002-on estates: "carefully prise off the rear bumper corner protection strips." Despite looking at videos (of 9-3s) and other people's posts and starting from the wheel arch end, I still can't get the things off! I've blunted two plastic trim removal tools trying to get any edge behind them, and put slight scuff on the edge of one trim when trying to push the top down, the bottom up, or the end in.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm considering whether I can commit to hosting it - I run servers for myself, other people and in my day job. I would need to read up on the Simple Machines Forum software and get an idea of the traffic (probably not a lot given the activity) and current database size. But I'm busy with work and other demands on my time so couldn't do a migration until later in the year. How soon do you want to decide?

Do you get anything at all on screen or any beeps? If you see a boot logo but it doesn't find the disk, it's likely the disk is dead. If there's nothing at all showing on screen, it can vary from a failed backlight (so booting, you just can't see it) to a dead motherboard. Try removing the laptop battery - I have seen a failed battery prevent power on.

If it's a machine failure, access the drive from a working system. I have a machine with hot swap set up for data recovery, but often a simple USB drive adapter will suffice. You just need to know it has sufficient power to spin the disk. Be careful with the system you use to recover data - you don't want to infect it with anything from the old drive!

If it has read errors, you might still get something back. If it can't read you need software to try and make a disk image from what it can, then recover files from that.

If you get repeated clicking from the drive it's likely a head has gone or the bearing has seized. Consider this a loss unless you pay the specialists. I have recovered data from drives in varying states of failure but it's not a fun job.

I think Sunday next means 26th Feb.

Replaced the failed cabin blower on the estate. Took a while to get it out and even longer to get the new one in - Haynes says to flex the bulkhead with a ratchet strap. It is possible... eventually. Took about 3 hours, though that involved a lot of stopping to let cars go past and learning where all the screws are. All back together by 5, now has a nice quiet fan. I was very pleased until I remembered the windscreen wiper motor connection! So back in tomorrow. At least the wiper arms have been cracked off, so it shouldn't take long.
