SWMBO has her eye on a KitchenAid mixer - I personally think it would be cheaper to keep buying cakes!  In defence of Dualit I can buy new elements locally and the timer is only clockwork so a competent clock repairer should be able to fix it.

Should we start a "kitchen equipment" thread??

I am well aware that buy cheap = buy rubbish, which is the reason we own a Dualit toaster rather than a £20 one which has to be thrown away every year!

We had a Dualit mixer that packed up after 13 months so they would not repair under warranty, and a crappy Wahl James Martin one that lasted ages. Our toaster is a £20 one we've had for about 5 years.
Nothing is ever straightforward.

My point about the high level brake light is that the light from the car in front of you is now less visible to the bloke behind you.

+1 on the wiggle check. Pull out and re-seat both ends of the data cable, blowing dust out if poss., and check power is getting to the disc.

Could be a PSU or a motherboard failure, too - the diagnostic only knows it isn't seeing the HDD, not necessarily why.

However, seeing it from the "grumpy old g1t" viewpoint, the recent outbreak of tints and SUVs/Crossovers have undermined the usefulness of the mandatory high-level brake-light. If you are behind a car with heavy rear-screen tints, or any 4x4 or lookey-likey, it's no different to travelling behind a bus. Safety advantage gone, drop back and increase length of traffic queue.

And at two-lane junctions on to main roads where you are turning left and the motor next to you is turning right or going across, it is becoming increasingly common to have to wait until the other car, of type described above, has departed (and hope the next bugger in the queue doesn't have a van or creep forward too far) to get a safe view of the traffic.  The departure junction from our office is like this, and I find myself on occasions waiting a couple of minutes to get out, during which time no traffic has come along my side, but the other s0d has blocked my view...

I keep putting off the change to a later car because every time I tinker with mine it reminds me how good it is. I've never kept a car this long before!

I know people keep saying how they can get 40mpg out of a faster petrol version, and mine rarely does, but I get a (SID) 37+mpg, day in, day out, and never worse than 36mpg even with a lot of town driving. (I have pushed it down to 34, once, but that was a longish night thrash at good-morning-your-honour MPH)

The sums just don't seem to point to a newer diesel (with DPF/DMF issues) or a petrol replacement.

I'll just let it carry on growling for a while yet, I guess.

Thank you very much, folks - I'll be here all week. DVDs are available in the foyer....

I believe he has seen the light, brothers and sisters!

Oooh - missed out what I did last weekend.

Headlight refurb. They were starting to make the car look like an old blind dog.

- small bit of 320 grit wet&dry
- small bit of 500 grit wet&dry
- egg-cup of T-Cut
- Metric f***tonne of elbow-grease

They aren't back to new, but at least they are smooth and some of the light goes where it should now! About 2 hours work, but I wish I'd put a polishing bonnet on my cordless drill!

Oh, the socket is there OK, but whether it is OBD-II compliant or not is another issue! Tech2 of course works, as it is manufacturer's-own system, but standardised signalling on 2003 diesels is at the very least hit-and-miss.
I'm wondering if there is a definitive VIN break-point for that, some time during 2003? Mine appears to precede it, damn....

Last weekend - 4 new Hankook Ventus Primes. This weekend - new MAF sensor, remove and clean EGR, MAP and inlet, refill washer bottle.

That's enough for the moment I think....

It's a dirty job,but someone has to do it :)

TBH, nobody in the UK HAS to do it. It's a self-inflicted wound.

I have been looking at other offerings (just to see) but nothing really fits the bill and the 9-5 keeps ticking all the boxes for so many reasons.

Me2.  Can't even think of particularly good reasons to go to a later 1.9Tid from my 2.2 apart from the noise levels!
