Oil/engine issue
« on: 12 May 2014, 03:25:34 PM »
I just recently bought a 2011 9-5 from a dealer that had several still "new."  I drove it back from New England and after about 6 weeks, it has 2000 miles on it.  On the drive back, I got a low oil warning and put a quart in.  A few days later, I noticed a minor amount of oil on my garage floor, and so I put down some paper.  Very small leak, but after about 4 weeks, I got the low oil warning again and put in another quart.  Took it to a repair shop, and they couldn't find a leak, as it seems to be quite slow.

Additionally, I have recently noticed that I occasionally get a puff of blue smoke when I accelerate.  Not all the time, and I'm not sure if it's on a slow accelerate or a faster one as yet.  Also, I've had it idle roughly at stoplights a handful of times in the past 2-3 weeks.

Some Google searching suggests that because the car sat for so long that it may have some issues with the valve stem seals.  Can anyone diagnose the problem or know if they could be related?

Thanks in advance for any help.  I suppose my next stop is going to be the GM dealer.

Welcome!
Helpful answers will follow, but first, what engine's in it?

Only the diesel engines have an oil level warning light.

Petrol/Gasoline engines have an oil pressure switch.  If it is this light that has come on, you may already have some damage to the engine.

You need to find the source of the oil leak.  If you only get a small leak showing when stationary, you may have a leak on the pressure side.  A common point to check is the oil pressure switch itself.  This can leak through the middle of the body, not down the threads.  So tightening it up is not necessarily a cure.

Another leak point to check is the "banjo" unions on the pipes between the gearbox and the oil cooler.

But there are other places for leaks, check all over.

Only the diesel engines have an oil level warning light.

I would ask if you are sure/what your source is for that information on the basis that every single engine (2.0, 2.8 petrol and 2.0 diesel) on my copy of WIS shoes an oil level sensor sitting in the sump of the new 9-5 engine. I would also suggest that if the car was picked up from New England and that it's had quarts of oil in it that it will almost certainly be petrol as this would be a US spec car.

My concern would be where the oil is going, if it's got a small leak that's not good but if there are puffs of smoke it could be burning the oil, I'd return it to the place it was purchased from and tell them to fix it.

I think I'm going senile!  :-[

Didn't pick up on the new 9-5......

I even double checked the old style 9-5 WIS twice before I posted.  ::)

Just ignore me!!  :'(

Thanks for the input!  It's the 2.0 turbo.  My normal mechanic that handles basic maintenance on my cars did an oil change on it yesterday and wanted to start there and see if that cleared up the issues.  He put in the GM 5W30 Dexos oil, which he says is good for the turbo.  The owner's manual doesn't seem to indicate the sort of oil to use, so any recommendation as to whether the Dexos is the best fit would be appreciated.

I'm kind of unclear how much the car is GM and how much it's Saab and whether the general GM maintenance guidelines are best for this car.

Nevermind, I found the oil recommendation in the back of the manual.  Looks like the 5W-30 works.

The engine in your car is a GM engine.  Dexos2 oil is GM oil to their specification.  So you should be fine with that.

The Saab shares the engine with the GM cars in Europe.  Vauxhall & Opel "Insignia" range.

The car is very much GM with many Saab improvements.
