Please don't take this as a negative as it's not, I'm just sure your all aware with the way things are today with internet fraud/identity theft if you display you registration number on the web you're leaving yourself wide open.
I and the rest of Saab Tech Talk team/members would hate to see anybody getting parking fines/speeding tickets or worse just from posting a picture of there car on a friendly forum

Not a problem with me. Images I use have either been tweaked, or relate to completely different vehicles!

Sorry, I've never really understood the problem with this. Anyone walking by can see your numberplate, so why is it such a big deal when it's displayed in an online photo?

It makes it easy for crooks to find the model/colour/spec/year of the car they want to clone and they also know what area it lives in.

Help nick crooks by pasting images of totally unrelated number plates onto the image of your car   

In all seriousness - this happened to the daughter of a colleague of mine - she had speeding fines and parking tickets up the ying yang and it seemed to take ages for the authorities to get to the bottom of it and wake up to the fact her number was on a similar colour/model car


...And her number plate wasn't even in any photos on the internet!!

And that says it all.  For me, this falls into the "Don't panic, Captain Mainwaring, don't panic!!" category. Scaremongering. Like walking round in public witha DSLR camera means your either a paedophile or terrorist. Or both.

Personally I'd agree with that to some extent, but to be honest if I was posting a pic on the internet I'd edit the number in one way or another - it doesn't take a minute to do it, and possibly reduces the risks I guess

Can someone tell me how to 'swirly' out my plate? Camera software won't do it and I don't have access to Photoshop. Is there some free software I can download?

irfanview is free - not sure if it does the swirly thing or not..

You can download Gimp for free - its really very good - quite powerful considering its free! Haven't looked to see if it can do the swirly thing but it will certainly edit stuff like number plates one way or another... Even if its just painting over them.

Host your photos from somwhere like Photobucket completely free. It also gives you an option to edit photos, and there you will find a 'Twirl' tool

Just read this thread, don't do the twirly thing if you really care about people finding out as there is software out there that can reverse the effect.
