Just had the results of today's MOT test

  • Brake pipe corrosion - OK, expect that from time to time. No big deal to address
  • Rear shock absorber fluid leakage - OK, expect that from time to time. No big deal to address
The ones that surprised me were
  • Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced, nearside and offside outer (sill)
  • Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded
I'm going to do a bit of investigation on the last two things but, at 270,000 miles, it looks like it could be the end of the road for my '02 Aero! A real shame as it still drives well :'(

I can only offer experience of the rear suspension, and it's a common thing, it seems.  I hope that I caught mine in time.

Rust killer (Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80)
Hammerite
Finally underseal.

I think you need to ask the MOT guy to tell you exactly what the problems are. My 02 Aero estate  has 320k on it and on the last MOT the garage commente that the car was very well prepared. Mind you, I had replaced part of the spare wheel well and gone all round the underside cleaning /  treating / painting areas where the brown stuff was trying to get a hold. That included the rear inner sill areas just ahead of the trailing arm mounts, which might be your issue.

Good luck

My old 2003 Aero had that in Nov 2014.

Date tested 4 November 2014
FAIL
Mileage 133,972 miles

Reason(s) for failure
Offside Registration plate lamp not working (1.1.C.1d)
Offside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded (5.2.6)
Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.B.6a)

But went on for another 3 years before the gear box or clutch exploded causing the owner to scrap it rather than repair.

If they're a thorough station they will have marked areas of corrosion with a yellow chinagraph pencil so you can see them.

I sought out a second opinion from the nearest Saab specialist to me on the corrosion failures flagged up in the MOT. There's a lot of welding needed. "Much as I want to keep as many Saabs as possible on the road, together with the rear shocks and brake pipes, the overall cost to fix this will be way too high".

I bought it back in 2012 for just over £2000. It had 100,000 miles on the clock and I've had 170,000 miles of joyful motoring from it since then. Apart from regular servicing (normally by me) and the usual tyre/brake renewals, the biggest expense in all that time was replacing the rear shock/spring assemblies.

I'll be sad to see it go. Not sure what I'll get to replace it, I might just start using my Senior Citizen's Bus Pass...

I tried that a few weeks ago. Horrendous experience.

I've had the Pass for nearly 10 years and never used it. I don't really think losing the Saab will get it into use, more likely to get me walking more!

Isn't it being scrapped so when I retire in perhaps 5 years I won't get it like the Winter Fuel allowance!!!!

Geographically I live in Ellesmere Port, south Wirral, about a mile into Cheshire from the county border with Wirral MBC, part of Merseyside Metropolitan Council, with my home town Liverpool at the centre. We've got a self-contained, highly reliable local rail service, the biggest outside London, with 75 miles of track, and excellent connections to main lines through the country.
For years residents of Merseyside when they reach 60 have been given free passes for BOTH buses and Merseyrail.
Cheshire, like most other councils, gives only bus passes and only when you reach state pension age. What really rankles is that the Merseyrail network operates into Cheshire, as far as Chester to the south. One of the stations is 300 yards from my house. So we've got the convenience of the service but no local discount for being old. My wife keeps saying we should move house across the border so we can get free passes and save around £60 a year on train fares. At least we can use our Senior railcards.

Grumpy old man rambling off topic.

I always remember our postcode changing from L45 to CH45 but remaining within Merseyside. Bizarre and I think driven at the time by some form of snobbery. My folks are in West Kirby now and a hate to say it, make good use of the trains..

Herts free bus pass is used fairly often, usually just to the station for a train into London.  It really isn't worth the effort of fighting London traffic.  Even outside of the Congestion Charge times you can't find anywhere to park.

Hi fka! I'm in CH66. Small world. I'm Liverpool born and bred and proud of it.

Not sure I'll ever get a bus pass the way the system is going....

Wouldn't matter though, my old village had 1 bus a week.

Arrived at 11:00 on a Wednesday and left again at 11:30.
