What I would describe as strong money at £14,750 , and the car doesn't have Drivesense or Harman Kardon sound system.

Does look tidy though

I'm looking for an airbox / air filter housing, part number 45 72 509 for the OG 9-5, any model year so long as it's from a petrol car, B205,B235,B308, diesels are different

Not expecting the mounting bobbins to be intact   :)

Manual gearbox with Drivesense, looks to be a very nice car. not too sure about the illumination on door opening though

Very similar spec to mine, just posting this for interest, considering how infrequently these come up

New Saab 9-5 (2010 on) / 9-5 NG Rescue project
« on: 10 February 2024, 12:35:35 PM »
At least I hope it's a rescue, rather than a breaker

Just picked up a manual Aero TTid XWD. You can see that it has a panoramic roof, very good spec and low mileage too. Major problem is that that a driveshaft has popped out, because the subframe has failed.

Getting a subframe may be a challenge, so I see options as follows:

  • New subframe - not possible as there are none on the shelf in Sweden anymore, delisted
  • Second hand XWD subframe - probably preferred option
  • Second hand 2WD subframe - perhaps possible, make one good XWD out of the two
  • Repair the subframe using a decent welding / engineering shop

Any additional thoughts / suggestions appreciated

Today I removed the driveshaft I will hopefully effect some sort of temporary repair to make the car moveable without involving dollies or the wheel hitting the rear of the wheelarch

I don't think this subframe meets the MOT advisory of "Sub Frame corroded, but not seriously weakened"

Time for some photos

New Saab 9-5 (2010 on) / Diagnostic Gear for NG
« on: 13 January 2024, 02:10:52 PM »
I need to become somewhat self sufficient on diagnostics on the new 9-5

There's a whole new world of three letter algorithms, what I have figured out is the the GM software is called GDS or GDS2, and like almost everything these days it's a subscription service for garages

I already have a one make version of the iCarsoft reader and could buy another for the Vauxhall / Saab, or one with multi manufacturer capabilites

https://diagnostic-world.com/pages/best_saab_obd2_diagnostic_scan_tools__2021_guide_273376.cfm

I'm pretty certain that I have done ABS dagnostic / fixing with these, module programming might be beyond it's capabilities

Then there's this, which is new to me, but seems to have a good following. Plus I believe you can do a PayPerDay deal with AC Delco for module programming, should I ever need to

Apparently you can download a VirtualMachine already set up so get dealer functionality. I'm comfortable with having VM's as I have one for the Peugeot

https://www.obdiitool.co.uk/wholesale/vxdiag-vcx-nano-for-gm-opel.html

Then you go up the cost curve to stuff like Autel & the more expensive iCarsoft stuff

Number one priority is airbag diagnostic as I have an MOT due in 6 weeks

Thoughts, comments, recommendations, places to go all very much welcomed

New Saab 9-5 (2010 on) / Another Ng 9-5 joins the forum
« on: 12 January 2024, 02:09:59 PM »
Yesterday, I took the plunge into the strange new world that is the NG 9-5, and as it was in London, I've put 250 miles on it so far and managed to work out a fair bit of the infotainment stuff.

What is it: It's a 2.0 Turbo4 ,Aero spec, Manual with XWD

As you would expect, it needs some work including a few bodywork things, nothing serious though.

Short term, these are the main things, in no particular order

Try to re-blacken the radio buttons that are worn through to white. Previous owner was definitely a bit of a fiddler in this regard
Replace the front number plate, that's easy & ordered
Decent clean & polish, though the paintwork overall is pretty good
There's a deep scratch in the rear 3/4, which may involve getting a paintshop involved, aerosol for other stuff will be ready later this afternoon
Light bar on the boot needs fixing, it's dim

There are two less cosmetic things to deal with

1. The headlamp washers are "disabled" & have rubber strips where the covers should be. I think these are just delivery nozzles, with a pressure pump on the washer bottle. I need to find out what bits I need & where to get them from
2. Spotted this morning there are two airbag warnings visible on the roof console

Which means I'm going to have to get something to do what I used to be able to do with Tech II, so as well as engine OBD, ABS and airbag capabilities are a minimum & I don't do subscription based stuff. I do have an iCarSoft reader for another car, which seems to work well enough, but I'm really looking for any recommendations.

Pictures may follow,

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Gearbox oil change - quantity ?
« on: 18 November 2023, 06:22:08 PM »
I have done the gearbox oil change today, which involved removing all the gearbox mounts to allow it to be shifted forward to access the 8mm allen drain and fill sump plugs.

Saab WIS says 1.9 litres for a "dry" box. It will have been fairly dry as I allowed it to drain overnight & the box was tilted towards the drain.

Filling in up today it took 2.2 litres to be able to see the oil, having allowed it to settle, so adding another 100ml in there's a total of 2.3 litres in total

Is this normal / correct / reasonable. I haven't taken the car on the road yet, but don't want to cause a problem through overfilling.

Having upset the ABS system by running the car with the wheels off the ground, 1st gear seems very quiet, but there is some whining in 2nd-5th. Trying to establish if I'm being hyper critical....

The drain plug did have a coating of metal particles on it & I could see some very fine metallic particles in the oil as it drained. However, this isn't so surprising for a geatbox / oil that has done 152,000 miles

Oh and note to self, next time leave the gear selector in neutral instead of reverse. That way you might not have to partially dismantle the gear selector to be able to start the car because the gear lever is in reverse but the gearbox is in another gear  :-[

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Washer bottle level sensor
« on: 16 November 2023, 04:32:30 PM »
SID was giving me a permanent "low on washer fluid" message so I decided to investigate.

Imagine my surprise to discover that the connector onto the sensor was taped up (with a bridge wire in) and the sensor was hanging loose.

Subsequent investigation taught me that the sensor operates inside a plastic tume, which is activated by a magnetic reed switch activated by a float which is exposed to the washer fluid tank

Looking at the Saab parts diagram the part number seems to be 12 788 696, but reading around suggests there are in fact two designs. One normally open, the other normally closed, with a difference in the logic within SID

The reason I am asking is that the sensor I have doesn't fit into the plastic tube, or at least it appears to require much more force than I expect to use

I solved the problem by taking a complete tube & sensor from spares I had on the shelf, but having checked continuity on the wires to the reed switch it doesn't seem to be switching when the float is moved

Just trying to decide if I should put it on the shelf, or bin it..

Any experience ?

The 2008 Aero "twin" is a bit marginal on emissions, it's looking like it may need a cat after all

Does anyone have one that is surplus to requirements ?

10
I wanted to do some further research on the cat operation / diagnosis on the twin 9-5 a couple of days ago and went to https://www.trionictuning.com/forum/ as it's a great tech resource, as well as the mapping

The website is not responding

Headed over to https://www.uksaabs.co.uk/UKS/index.php?

This too is not responding, indications about a certificate error, but I don't think that's the real issue

Does anyone have any idea what has happened to either site ?

Just watched this, follows a car sold at auction through restoration & subsequent resale

I'll not spoil the story, except to say it's green

Saab 9000 (1984-1998) / New 9000 acquisition
« on: 18 August 2023, 05:12:24 PM »
This week I collected this, a '97 2.3 CSE, quite a bit of history, 132k miles, but stood for a while....

I gave her a quick wash' n polish today

Now I need to decide what to do with her.

Needs a pair of headlights, rear panel, exhaust is broken at centre cat, SRS light will not go out & alternator seems a bit lazy at 11.6v. Nice & clean interior.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Brake pad failures ?
« on: 13 August 2023, 11:45:22 AM »
For the second time this year, on two different cars, I have suffered from separation of the friction material from the backing plate

Bit of a  :o as I felt the pedal move almost to the floor while I was in traffic

It's always been outer offside pad, which at least makes it easy to see. The inner pad still has 8mm of the 11mm when new.

Fortunately, I have a set in stock so the car will be back on the road & back to full retardation abilities shortly

Anyone else seen this ?

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Saab 9-5 body cuts
« on: 06 August 2023, 03:09:09 PM »
I'm busy at the moment removing what I think are essential body part components from the pair of 9-5 saloon shells I have (4 rear arches, a pair of rear inner wing sections) . Plans to get the shells away to the scrapman this week.

I'm hoping to put some pictures up later, but though I would put this up as an offer in case someobody is desperate for some cuts. Does anybody want a front end for a crashed 9-5, ......

I have to say, I have spent a couple of days so far, trying to figure out how to get out the bits I want. Fed up of spot welds, am now moving to more destructive methods  :-X  The body assembly is complex !

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Wierd battery failure
« on: 04 April 2023, 10:58:55 PM »
So, emergency call out to rescue the black Aero on Sunday evening, which wouldn't start after filling up (engine barely trying to turn over). Jump start & off she goes. 14.2v at the battery when running,

Put the battery on charge, saw it go up from 12.8v to 13.3v, full bars on the little charger so disconnected & left to stabilise. 2 hours later shows 12.8v, so seems OK

Next morning she started, but only just, never mind, 230 miles to charge her up. 230 miles later, turned off, left 5 minutes & it wouldn't turn over. Bump start & visit to motor factor for a new battery. All is good

Tested the battery tonight. Still showing 12.8v. I expected 12.0, or even less

It seems the battery can retain a voltage but is unable to deliver current

Any ideas what's going on, I haven't seen this failure mode before

By the way, OpenSid tells me the car start time is now 0.9 seconds, when it was 1.4-1.5 seconds before. I did suspect the battery was getting weak.
