A minor detail I forgot to put in the description: there's a minor oil leak from the back of the engine somewhere. Oil can get onto something hot so you can smell it a bit. Less of a problem on a longer journey as it seems to burn off.

Audax:
Oil leak from the back of the engine is most likely to be the oil pressure sensor. They're about £10-£15.
