Headlamp washer jets not working?
« on: 24 July 2020, 08:41:32 PM »
Now I've had the Aero 2.5 years now, and I've never noticed or checked the headlamp washers. Today, I got the Missus to look at the front of the car whilst I  put the windscreen washers on and, yep, you guessed it, the headlamp washers don't seem to be doing anything.

I assume these should be working at the same time as the screen washers?

What should I be looking out for to try and get these working again?

Headlamp washers will only work under certain conditions.

1.  The headlamps have to be turned on.
2.  You have to hold the screenwash switch on for at least half a second, maybe a bit longer, but a quick squirt of the screen won't activate them.  Then they should spray twice.
3.  Once they have worked, they don't work again for the next half dozen screen washes, unless 2 minutes have passed.  Those numbers are about right.  But they can be altered by Tech 2.

Well I've tried it - lights on and pulled the stalk back for around 3 seconds. Got out and had a look, but no wet on the lamps at all :(

There's a separate pump for the headlamp washers.  If it was tried when it was frozen, it may have burnt out.  Or the motor may have turned and the impeller frozen which could have snapped that off. Or just blown a fuse.

I don't think that there's a non-return valve in the headlamp system. Can you head the pump running? It plugs into the reservoir behind the LH headlamp, so be careful if it starts working when you're listening, you will get wet!!

The pumps failing is really common unfortunately, I had to do one on the aero a few years ago and the replacement was £80! They used to only be £20 back in the day.

Seems you can get a brand new one for just £35 these days!

Worth checking the fuse first I guess. Which fuse is it I need to look for?
