Two days in...
« on: 17 May 2018, 08:29:03 PM »
We are two days into a 16 day driving holiday, and this morning the heater blower decided to impersonate a pigeon cooing in the dashboard.   Mile after mile of cooing... :'( :'( :'(

It seems that the pigeon died in the night. But it has taken the aircon with it. :(

Heading south to warmer climes tomorrow. :o

Well it’s a saga!! :(

Broke down on autobahn. Trailered to Merzig. Car in Opel garage. I think the turbo has blown. No hire cars within 100 km it’s a bank holiday weekend. Nothing opens again until Tuesday.

Looking at our options now.

Had a quick look over the car this evening.  No oil has escaped outside the engine, so it looks like the turbo.

Will speak to the garage on Tuesday to see what they say.  The only plus side of this is that we could see inside the workshop and there was another 9-5 estate on a lift.

We can't find any hire car places open.  None are likely to answer the phone before Tuesday, unless they are an airport.  The nearest is a 2 hour taxi ride away.  So we are proceeding by train.  5 hours to our hotel.  Only one day €50 for both of us for a four hour journey, plus free travel in Germany on their Bank Holiday Monday the next day...

A souvenir...

What a bummer! Hope you're reunited with the car soon.

For some reason this reminded me of my Dad when my Mum and I joined him on a business trip to Germany. The hotel had a sofa bed that I was sleeping on but it was broken.
My Dad spent a good twenty minuets very confidently explaining to an extremely bemused concierge "das Bett ist knackered!"  :D

Oh man! What a drama.

Its often that these things seem to happen at the most inopportune times  >:( :-\

Hope you get it all sorted without further trouble

I've got one of those too. Very useful considering my language skills are at best 'Allo Allo'  :D

Well, we are now having a beer beside the Rheinfall in Schaffhausen. Car is 5 hour’s away by train. We hope to find out the problem tomorrow...  then we can plan for the next stage.

How many miles has the car done? Is this the original Turbo?

Hope this doesn't affect the holiday too much.

We have carried on by train.  We couldn't find a hire car anywhere on Saturday afternoon.  The best offer was that we took a 2 hour taxi ride to Luxembourg Airport where there *might* be a car.

The garage reopens tomorrow.  It's a bank holiday weekend in Europe as it's the proper Whitsun celebration.  We will try and find out what the diagnosis is.  Hopefully solvable inside a couple of days, if it is the turbo and they can get one quickly.

At least we got to the Rheinfall, where we wanted to be, but the fast food stall was surprising...

The only good news today is that it is just the turbo that’s failed. I feel reasonably confident that the mechanic I spoke to is OK. When I say “we” I mean my wife. After she said “So my husband was right. It is just the turbo”,  she turned to me and said “He’s saying that he can’t just replace the turbo he has to take all the pipework and intercooler apart and clean the oil and bits out”.

So there hope all will be well - except my pocket. :(
