Ah, well it's going to get a full 24 hours now. It seems it leaves a non permeable finish on, is that correct ?

The engine is back together. All running with no oil leaks, even from the oil cooler connections.

I have had it up to temperature once, it was a bit tappety at first and has quietened down but there are still a couple of noisy ones. The whole oil filter / chain area is quiet now, so perhaps I am hearing things that were disguised before. More running time needed I think.

I started a few other jobs on it. The handbrake was sticking on, so two new return springs fitted. I'm out of stock of those now. The rear left caliper spring was missing so I found one and fitted that.

I have started taking the right driveshaft off. The outer boot is badly ripped. I suppose the new one fitted for the 2019 MOT wasn't of particularly good quality for £6.50

I'm very happy with Hydrate 80.  I used it on the rusty edge of the roof of the estate and that is still OK after four years.  At that time I cleaned out the brush on a rusty safety chain hanging from my trailer.  The rust is "encapsulated" and hasn't re-erupted, and it's been hanging in the open air since then.  I used it on my rear wheel arches and they are fine after two years.  The arches got Hydrate 80 followed by Hammerite, followed by Hammerite with Waxoyl.

Yeah, it seems to have worked well, I bought it based on your previous comments.

I did one part of a front wishbone as a test too. Without paint it just looks like it's passivated and painted a dull purply black. It seems to go a long way too.

A little more work on her today having woken up with a bright idea.

The valve cover was removed and I took off every capshaft cap, removed the bolts and made sure the oilway and the groove up the inner bolts was clean. Then I cranked it over with the inner bolts still on the bench until I could see oil emerging from the top of every cap. Interestingly, the cap that was last to see oil was what I suspected was the source of the noisy tappets

Threw it back together and the tappet noise seems to be gone

I normally paint straight over the Hydrate 80 as both that and the BH Electrox primer are normally applied to bare metal, so no need for both is my motto.  Incidentally the Electrox is great too (as are most of the BH products I have used so far).

Welcome to STT !

I have been doing a bit more work with the BH 80 today. Spotted some other areas that would benefit from treatment, mainly some underseal missing from the left hand chassis rail and the back of the right hand chassis leg, just before the bumper. Same weak spot as the 9000 then   ::)  I always like to give a bit of treatment to the vertical surfaces near the rear trailing mounts too.

This morning I had a fight with a driveshaft and came out ahead on points. Well that's my description of putting a new boot on anyway. I wish I had the proper tool to tighten the metal bands that hold the rubber in place.

The rest of the afternoon was spent underneath getting ready for MOT. It needs a pair of track rod ends, so while I am deciding where to get them I made sure the clamp nuts could be undone, a little heat was required. Handbrake has been balanced up too.

It also needs a set of rear dampers as it appears the outer shell has rusted through. The springs have benefitted from the Scottish air too. I'll need to see what I have on the shelf, but I suspect what I have are not the right type.

I don't suppose anyone has a spare pair of rear estate dampers lying around

I'm just in the final throws of erecting a long needed new shed (The last one put the leaning tower of Pizza to shame) and came across bag of those f-ing things - I feel your pain!

Absolutely no point in mentioning this but you missed my Aero suspension by a few months. The rear springs and dampers were relatively fresh .. Sorry!

Good luck with the new shed, it'll soon be full  :)

I have ordered a set of the proper crimp pliers so I will not have this problem in the future, and they will get a test drive on this car giving a final nip. It's a benefit of lower quality but "good enough" for infrequent use tools being made in China, but then again they are not going to last 30 years.

It is a shame about your old suspension, I did see the ad but I was either too slow or quick enough but thought it was collect only. Never mind, I'm sure it went to a good home.

Some further work on this project today. First job of the day was to check the tracking after fitting two new track rod ends. I looked and thought, hmm, that's toe-ing out. It was, by 10'. After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing I settled on 15' in, steering wheel straight ahead so that's good enough for me :)

I would have like to have refitted the  drivers window, but the bits from Bill have not arrived yet (he posted them out on time), so time for a bit of a wash and a clean up, inside and out. Once the window is fitted she's ready for and MOT, so here's some pictures

When it's through the MOT, how many of the fleet of Saab estates will be roadworthy?

That'll be four. The blue one is having a rest and needs work, the DE needs the engine finishing and then the 2.0 glacier blue saloon would pass if put in

BallOxed the base up a bit (used one of those ProBase plastic things filled with shingle) it's "sort of" level but at least no springy spots on the floor!

It is a shame about your old suspension, I did see the ad but I was either too slow or quick enough but thought it was collect only. Never mind, I'm sure it went to a good home.

Can't remember exactly how it was worded but did prefer collection - ended up posting it using Hermes door to door courier service, which is surprisingly cheap and I've used several times since .

When I did my shed I went old school..... paving slabs....... as I had a load spare too

I was not a fan of the Aero steel finish at first, but am used to it an prefer it now. There are two wood finishes, this is the darker of the two I suppose I need to find out what they are supposed to be :)
