Just run in then!
My 9-3 Tid has just a few miles short of all the eights (88,888) and is still on the original cambelt and water pump. Either it will shed its bits tomorrow or there will be lots of wagged fingers on here (or maybe both)
My indie garage which looks after all our motoring needs (eg MOTs and servicing, at my age I have stopped crawling under the car) checked his workshop info and for that engine in the Saabs, Alfas and Vauxhalls the recommendation is 100k miles/10 years. Hmmm. I know that is way longer than Saab's guide but we will be having it done around 90k (bits will come from Saab Tech Parts Europe - under £100 belt kit and coolant pump, all genuine parts.

Saab Tech Parts Europe is the parts part of SaabTech Welwyn, just up the road from me - well, less than 20 miles...

Saab keep changing the service interval for the timing belt and water pump.  My WIS may be out of date, but for 2008 it says 120,000 Km (75,000 miles) or 8 years.  I think in the english version it's in the 72,000 mile service.   But I heard that at some point it was 90,000 miles.  So who knows ::)

[edit]

The 10 year / 90,000 miles is for 2009 onwards.  According to my WIS.

SWMBO now runs a VW Up. The car's four years old next month, 23k miles. Mrs G. only does around 3k a year now.

Cambelt change is scheduled at five years or 60k...

...whichever comes first.

Interesting Will - I wonder what, if anything, changed regarding belt/tensioner/idler/pump parts on the later cars?

It changes around a bit but the best time to do the belt, pulleys and water pump is at the first intermediate+main service after you get to 70,000 (miles), my experience is that the water pumps start to seize somewhere after getting to around 90,000 miles, so if you're keeping the car I would do it sooner rather than later.

Cheers Audax. I'll get the bits soon and sort it.

Well, I finally got round to getting the belt, bits and pump replaced. Pleased to report that there is no sign of any degradation of all of the parts barring the belt. The idler, tensioner and water pump show no play in the bearings and no roughness, also the pump still seems to have that nice feel when turning it that the seal is still gripping nicely. All I can see to show the miles covered is a very slight hardly visible cracking at the base of the belt teeth, and that is only when I stretch the belt right back.
Mileage 90,972.
So if I live long enough (unlikely) and have the car long enough (very unlikely) I may get the belt changed again......

Mine should make the 150,000 miles early next year.  If I had still be working, I think that it would be approaching 250,000 miles by now.

I was doing 22,000-25,000 miles a year when working, but now it's only 10,000 to 15,000 a year.  Her car is doing more than usual because I keep borrowing it and her singing career involves more travel than her previous Chartered Accountant job did.

Nice one Will. Our 9-3 is going as well as ever. Doesn't use oil between services, which I do annually, even though at about 10-11k per year, the oil could I suppose last longer. I use the ESP since two services ago.

More regarding milestones: I had a basic auto oil change done last year, but soon after that every time I accelerated out of a sharp left turn the car lost momentum, revs rose, then there would be a loud bang as drive took up again. While I could have taken it back, I wanted to sort it myself. At the time, my local chap who does our MOTs and who used to be one of my mechanics when I was a service manager years ago, and who has just done the cam belt, called his 'auto' guru, a clever chap named Laurie Baker, who spoke to me and listened to my account of the problem, and advised me to add 1/2 a litre of fluid and report back. Voila - problem solved. I had thought it may have been shortage of fluid, then what made my mind up for me was when I read up later on the fluid change procedure and I remember reading on one account that finally following the change, 1/2 a litre should be added. Ya live and learn.

Despite reporting on the good condition of the parts, I'm glad the belt change has been done now, and we can blast off darn Sarf with the caravan attached on onday.

Compared to a likely £600 or so for the belt and pump job at a dealer, we spent £92 off the bay (Saab Parts Euro) on the kit, £12.74 for a Dayco poly belt discounted at Eurocarparts and £125 to my pal for labour and coolant, which I had changed as it was 8 years old even though only a small amount gets lost from the pump. I could have done it but our workshop is full at the moment with refitting and I couldn't be ar5ed to do it on the drive.
