Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / Re: ROOF RAIL CORROSION
« on: 15 August 2014, 05:20:24 PM »
I have a small area of corrosion on my 2004 Estate as well.

I have come to the conclusion that when I cannot put up with it anymore the easiest option is probably to find a replacement set and just unbolt are refit.

There are often sets on the bay so when I can find a set at a reasonable price locally I will probably go that route.

Getting them painted professionally will probably cost a lot but having a set polished like some of the Dame Edna's had would look good and they they would either need lacquer applying or polishing them on a regular basis?

Is it a lot hotter than it was a few months ago in Austria? If it is maybe the compressor is working harder to keep you cool? Even a good A/C compressor will need 3hp to drive it. You should see how much the IAC has to ramp up to keep the idle at the same level when the compressor cuts in. That with the hotter air means the engine will be less efficient.

I know these cars do vary though from one car to another, my last Aero would easily do mid to high 30's on a long run but my currant Aero only does low 30's under the same conditions even though the mileage is a lot lower.

I have a friend who overhauls gearboxes of all makes for a living, he has been kept very busy for the last few years overhauling Auto gearboxes that fail or start playing up once the have done 120,000 miles or about 200,000km. He has a belief a lot have a design life of this sort of mileage.

Maybe the noise is related to gearbox in some way?

With cars not rusting like they used too the manufactures have got to find a way to keep us buying new ones or  spend lots keeping the old ones on the road.

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

There is a pressure regulator on the fuel rail.

Yes now you have said the difference is obvious. The earlier one has a wiggle in the tail pipe but the later one is almost straight.

I had thought about getting one of these but if the tailpipe is going to be a problem I wonder how this would fit?

What is the difference between pre 2003 and post 2004 Aero back box?

I know the part number is different but are they actually different? Will a pre 2003 box fit a post 2004 model.

Thanks

Something to remember when buying a used car.

Why would somebody sell a perfectly good car if there is nothing wrong with it?

Hopefully they have just found a newer one or one with less mileage but always have that in your mind when you are buying a used car.

The problem we have is most of us love our Saabs so unless it is a car that is coming from another Saab fanatic it will just be an old car to them and probably treated like one. As time goes on the pool of good cars will get less and less. A local breaker had what looked like a nice car, no damage but it had failed its MOT on a couple of things and the estimate made it uneconomic to repair.

I have been looking for a low mileage 9-5 for my Father in law for some time. I have seen some with very low miles but none yet that I would actually want to spend his money on as they look like they have been owned by somebody who does not care. One I looked like it had been used as a dog kennel, it only had 22k on it but the seats were scratched and wripped and it stunk of damp dog even though it had been valeted. Another stunk of cigarette smoke and who ever drove it must have been very heavy as the drivers seat was almost squashed flat.

Yes, the frontmost ones are Torx screws (internal, screwdriver style) on my 2004MY. I was contemplating removal and refurb just yesterday, as there is a lot of corrosion on the triangular section and the rearmost section between the mirror unit and the door.

Fit the earlier style mirrors and you wont have this problem, I managed to get some immaculate 2001 mirrors, I disassembled them and had the color part painted in the correct color and fitted them. Unless you are a Saab anorak you would never know.

A lot of modern Volvo's have one so it might be worth popping into a dealer or maybe a scrappy?

What holds it in?

This is the method for the early cars.

Ignition on. Engine running.

Press the Clear button once briefly to clear the message.

Then press and hold. It will bleep and say "Cleared" but keep holding the clear button until it bleeps again and says "Serviced".

Does it make much difference if the car is mainly used for short trips?

What is the general consensus of the life of a Lambda sensor.

I have found several references on the web saying they should be replaced at 70k to 100k.

I understand they get slow or can even fail but what mileage do ours last?

OK thanks guys, does fitting the Cobra inlet pipe have any benefit from a later car if it will even fit?

I understand they were changed on the later cars.

Classic Saab 9-5 (MY 1998-2010) / 260 bhp Aero?
« on: 04 April 2014, 07:45:30 AM »
What made the Dame Edna Aero's 260 bhp?

Was it the ECU or a mod to the engine?

Can it be retro fitted to the earlier Aero's? (2004)?

Thanks

Steve
