260 bhp Aero?
« on: 04 April 2014, 07:45:30 AM »
What made the Dame Edna Aero's 260 bhp?

Was it the ECU or a mod to the engine?

Can it be retro fitted to the earlier Aero's? (2004)?

Thanks

Steve

It's down to the software in the engine management and I'm guessing mostly gained from revisions to the intake allowing them to be safe with slightly more hp, the first Aero was 230hp, then 250hp, then 260hp, they are all the same amount of torque (350nm and 370nm overboost on manuals). You can tune them all to be 260hp with t7suite but it's little gain.

HP = Torque x Engine Speed x Constant

So if the peak torque is the same for all, the extra max hp is achieved by tuning the engine to keep the torque at higher revs.  Mostly you won't be driving the car at those engine speeds very often, so you won't see a real difference.  Best for more power is to get a tune that increases torque.

OK thanks guys, does fitting the Cobra inlet pipe have any benefit from a later car if it will even fit?

I understand they were changed on the later cars.

Steve, mine is the 2004 Aero (auto) which originally had 250bhp and 350Nm of torque. I had a Maptun Stage 1 fitted, which takes it to 265bhp and 420Nm - much easier than a new engine, and no need to make any other changes to your existing engine. Neos have it for £450 atm http://www.neobrothers.co.uk/maptun-stage-performance-upgrade-saab-b235r-aero-0205-p-2844.html?osCsid=82b97b571bdd30988464c6f5790afe5b.

It might let the car breath a bit more easily but you'll also need to change the turbo as the inlet is different. If you're not tuning it then I wouldn't bother.

I don't think it does a lot in the UK.  The main reason for smoothing the airflow through a turbo is to reduce head looses which increase turbulence and raise air temperatures.  Keeping engine and exhaust temperatures down.  These are the limiting factor on tuned turbo engines.  But high exhaust temperatures are only a real problem with long duration full throttle runs.  Not usually an option in the UK, unless you do track days.

Hi Steve.i was after more power with my previous 2002 9-5aero with a manual gearbox so I had the car tuned by abbots to around 280bhp and also 420nms of torque which does give you a very noticeable increase in power.max boost was reliable and never faded on long periods of acceleration .i had previously tried cheap tunes on other saabs and would now say don't bother with them as they are what they are.Cheap and poor.imho just go for a reputable saab tuner and you won't be disappointed, not worth messing around with inlet changes etc as whatever you do t7 will always adjust back to stock if you try to increase things yourself.hope this helps.p,s have a 9-3 aero v6 now which is hirsch tuned and that is a wonderfull tune with superb power delivery and I think they are discounting a lot of there tunes at the moment but that may be only on cars 06 and above...
