Cheap motoring
« on: 13 June 2020, 10:35:46 AM »
Well I've had a Peugeot 107 now for about 10 years. The car is 12 years old, and is the one car that I have had the longest out of any car I have ever had.

Today I got the insurance renewal through - £179, which I managed to knock them down to £148 ;). With 20 quid a year road tax, and around 50mpg (more if I did longer trips), this car really costs very little to run.

I thought I was about to have to replace the original battery, but no...it's still going strong. When I got the Saab 9-3 a couple of years back as a bit of a mid life crisis project car, I could have got rid of the 107, but I spread my annual mileage over both cars, and keep my Saab mileage low too :) And I don't have to worry about depending on the Saab (in case anything goes wrong, which I hope it won't!!)

If you want a cheap runabout, or a first car for the kids, these 107/C1/Aygos are now very cheap to buy. Toyota 3 cylinder engine, and no frills on a lot of them. When I was looking, the C1s were the poorest specced, and the Aygos the best specced (but also more expensive to buy). So I opted for the 107 with the a/c, elec windows, central locking, and alloys.....the best all round package, and still the same car underneath as the Aygo.

I used to run a Mk1 Clio (Phase 3).

Bought it for £200 as a rescue job, wind up windows, manual seats

Fully comp insurance was £60 for the first year  (well, £160 with nil NCB, but £100 cashback)

Ran it for 4 years, it was embarrassingly reliable with cheap parts. Sold it for more than I paid for it too

Bought this as a safe mode of transport for the wife and 4 children.
The children have all now left the nest, so we decided to keep it until it goes pop! Trouble is it  just just keeps going and as it is only used by the wife for town trips, very little mileage (106k).
Needs a new exhaust and a good service. Just changed the oil and filter.
Shogun 2.8 diesel manual - insurance is £114.
It is cheaper to keep it, than buy something else.
We have now owned it for 23 years.
A nice dilemma to have.

My cheapest would have been my old 1985 C900T8v

Bought for £700 @ 125,000m
Drove it for 5 years before it got rear ended and written off. I was paid out £650
Ins co. refused to take it away, so I drove it for 2 more years until the fearbox failed at 262,500m

7 years with boost wound right up.
137,500m
cost £50 + fuel, ins, tyres, brake pads and 1 head gasket.

Around about 1982 I purchased 1977 Toyota 1000 (predecessor to the Starlet) for £450, IIRC.

I had previously bought a 1995 Ford Consul L 2.0 litre which turned out to be a bad buy and I needed something inexpensive as I'd not many pennies left at my disposal.

Coming from the larger car to the little Toyota felt odd at first, but then I began to appreciate the sense of being able to zip about quite easily in the smaller car. Parking was a doddle too. :) It turned out to be a very reliable motor.

Well after 10 years of ownership of this 107, the engine light has just come on for the first time ever. Code P0420, which could be cat, lambda sensors or split breather pipes according to the forums. No limp home mode, and car seems to drive just fine with this on.

Will drop in to my mechanic for a diagnostic check later ;)
